‘Fresh snow’ ahead of King’s Birthday Weekend, but more rain on the way

A weekend of wild weather has given way to sunny skies, but more falls on the way ahead of the June long-weekend.

More rains are on the way for the King’s Birthday weekend.

Clean-up is underway after a weekend of wild weather that ripped the roof off a rural pub and left millions inundated by heavy rains.

Two people were hospitalised after a severe storm that ripped the roof off the Parade Hotel in Bunbury, south of Perth, on Sunday.

It comes less than a month after a tornado tore through the region which destroyed nine homes and damaged 16 others.

“This is the second time in a month we have been hit with a traumatic weather event damaging homes and businesses”, Bunbury MLA Don Punch said.

“Our thanks go out again to all the volunteers and staff of our response agencies who have been out helping people impacted by the storm.”

The wild weather had eased by Monday morning, with Perth forecast to receive a shower or two before rains build back up again from Thursday.

On the east coast, more than 90mm of rain drenched Sydney on Saturday, forcing the closures at the popular Vivid culture event.

The storms had since largely abated, though minor flood warnings were still in place for Wollombi Brook at Bulga and Mill Dam Falls.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned the reprieve may be short lived with forecasts of up to 35mm beginning from Wednesday and continuing into the long weekend.

The widespread rains failed too put a dampener on the country’s ski resorts, with Thredbo and Perisher in NSW and Hotham in Victoria recording snowfall.

Thredbo Resort reported 5cm of fresh snow overnight on Monday, “plus a dusting all the way down in the village”.

Across the border, images released by Hotham Alpine Resort on Monday showed a thick layer of snow blanketing the popular winter sport overnight.

It comes as many of the nation’s ski resorts prepare to open over the long-weekend, including Perisher, Lake Mountain Alpine Resort, and Mt Buller.

Spared the worst of the rains, Melbourne is forecast to receive up to 1mm throughout the week, according to BOM, with a high of 16C.

Adelaide, meanwhile, is forecast to reach a high of 18C with no rains, while Hobart will stay mostly cloudy with showers and a high on Tuesday of 16C.

Further north, Canberra is expected to reach a high of 17C on Saturday, while Brisbane, also skirting the rains further south, could reach a high of 22C on Wednesday.
