Bureau of Meteorologist forecasts rain dump to hit Qld

A rain dump is set to hit the eastern parts of Queensland at the very moment thousands gather for the annual EKKA show.

Thousands of revellers and visitors to Queensland’s beloved EKKA festival in Brisbane are being warned to bring their brollies and gumboots, with a rain dump set to hit the city smack bang in the middle of the massive agricultural show.

Bureau of Meteorologist Angus Hines told NewsWire that eastern parts of Queensland from Central Queensland through to the southeast could expect heavy rainfall beginning early next week, with some parts of the state set to receive rainfall totals of between 30mm and 40mm.

“It’s not eye-popping rain, not too alarming.

“(But) it’s decent rain for sure.”

Mr Hines said an onshore easterly flow developing across Thursday and Friday and then an “upper level weather feature” early next week would deliver the dark clouds and rain.

“I think plan ahead, definitely,” he said.

“Be aware there is some rain on the way.”

The EKKA, or The Royal Queensland Show, runs from Saturday, August 10, through to next Sunday, August 18.

The show is held at the Brisbane Showgrounds in the centre of the city.

It boasts a mix of agricultural display with thrill rides, dodgem cars, showbags, performances and food.

The rain dump would also likely hit parts of northern NSW, Mr Hines said.

For the rest of the country, Mr Hines said Australians could expect warm weather through to Wednesday, with the heat rising first in Western Australia and then spreading to South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania.

“It’s going to be a predominantly fine, sunny weekend,” he said.
