DALLAS sharpshooter Ryan Broekhoff today became the fastest Australian ever to score an NBA bucket as he made his debut for the Mavericks, but Aussie basketball legend Andrew Bogut says it won’t change him a bit.
The 28-year-old rookie played just four minutes in the Dallas Mavericks’ 121-100 loss to the Phoenix Suns today, launching three long range bombs and draining one in that time.

Like the former No.1 draft pick, Broekhoff grew up in Melbourne’s southeast suburbs and Bogut believes his demeanour — his nickname is ‘Rowdy’ — will help him handle the bright NBA lights.
“He’s a pretty humble guy, so I don’t think it’ll affect him to a point where he’ll be going too crazy or doing things that aren’t accustomed to him,” Bogut told the Herald Sun.
Bogut spent the first part of the 2016-17 season playing under coach Rick Carlisle in Dallas and believes Broekhoff will get plenty of burn as the season wears on.
“Knowing how Rick Carlisle works and being Dallas, he’s going to get opportunities to play and that’s the cool thing for him,” Bogut said.
“Rick would not play you for 10 straight games and then all of a sudden play you 30 minutes.
“Ryan’s ready to play and he shoots the ball too well not to find some minutes.”
Broekhoff was among eight new arrivals in Dallas, with the Mavericks signing towering LA Clippers centre DeAndre Jordan and using a draft-day trade to snare the services of EuroLeague MVP Luka Doncic.
Joe Ingles was at his jingling best in Utah’s 123-117 win over Sacramento, draining three from deep on his way to 22 points and six assists, while Dante Exum impressed off the bench with 13 points, four rebounds and four assists.
While there was hope San Antonio’s injury woes would allow Patty Mills to start, the Spurs opted to continue to use the Aussie sparkplug off the bench.
He managed only a pair of three-pointers in 30 minutes as his Spurs won their tilt with Minnesota 112-108.
