AUSSIE Richie Porte (BMC) has powered to victory on Willunga Hill in the TDU’s penultimate stage.
Porte attacked in the final climb to edge out Sergio Henao (Sky), with Michael Woods (Cannondale) third.
The win makes it three in a row on Willunga Hill for Porte, who also won the stage in 2014 and 2015.
Race leader Simon Gerrans (Orica-GreenEDGE) has held on to the Ochre Jersey, with a lead of nine seconds over the charging Porte.
He had started the day with a 14-second lead on Tinkoff’s Jay McCarthy. A third Aussie — BMC’s Rohan Dennis — had been 26 seconds behind the leader.
After Stage 5, Henao sits third, 11 seconds behind Gerrans, while McCarthy and Woods are a fruther nine seconds back.
Today’s 151.5km stage — the longest and hardest of the TDU — took riders up Willunga Hill twice, including the race to the finish line.
Reece Homfray predicted before the race that riders would face make-or-break battles and tipped a strong outing from the Sky climbing ace.
“Richie Porte will be going for a three-peat of stage wins but he’ll have to shake off the likes of Simon Gerans, Tiago Machado, Cameron Meyer and Simon Clarke,” Homfrey said.
