THE revamped Victoria Square, which includes a new fountain unveiled today, will be ready for the Tour Down Under despite the heatwave posing a challenge to last minute works, Adelaide City Council says.
The "water play fountain" at the northern end of the square shoots multiple jets from the ground and will provide a new way for people to cool off in town.

The fountain is in front of the stage area that will host the upgraded square's first major event, the TDU's opening concert on Saturday night featuring The Potbelleez.
The Tour's bike expo is being set up in the northern end of the square as workers complete paving and other finishing touches.
Project manager Tom Playford said workers would start early, break in the middle of the day and work into the evening to beat the heat in the coming days ahead of the square's opening to the public on Saturday afternoon.

Showing off the $28 million makeover and raising the Australian and Aboriginal flags in the middle of the square today, Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said the project made a "strong iconic statement" about progress in the city.
"This was a national disgrace and after five plans and 40 years we are at the start of something really profound," he said.
"The site looks great and it will mature with age like a good wine or indeed, a good person.
"The square will be fully operational and ready for the Tour Down Under.
"We'll be handing it over just in time."
Tour Down Under events manager Sally Heading is confident the square will be ready for the weekend and said the bike village and expo would have more than 60 exhibitors.
The central road through the square, now known as Reconciliation Plaza, will be closed from Tuesday and reopen after the Tour Down Under on January 27.
Mr Yarwood said after local government elections at the end of the year, it would be up to the next council to decide how to progress the remaining two stages of the $100 million masterplan for the square.
In the meantime the council would be talking to both major political parties about funding opportunities, he said.
The Three Rivers Fountain will be relocated at the southern tip of the square by the end of April.
