THE state’s judicial elite have suited up to raise funds to fight cancer by riding in this year’s Bupa Challenge at the Tour Down Under.
Judges and magistrates have joined forces with the Law Society and the Flinders Law School to meet the fundraising challenge.
Chief Justice Chris Kourakis, who has ridden the gruelling 100km-plus course several times, said this year’s event held particular significance for him because a close friend was recently diagnosed with cancer.
“Cancer is something that affects so many people and it is good to see so many judicial officers and lawyers commit to such a worthy cause,” he said.
Flinders Law School dean Kim Economides said he was also inspired by a close friend’s tragic battle.
“The law community is coming together for such a worthy cause and I’m proud to be a part of it,” he said.
Cancer Council SA chief Lincoln Size said Ride For A Reason in the Bupa Challenge had raised more than $2.4 million for the charity since 2009.
“We are extremely excited to be involved with this event where participants can dedicate their ride to someone,” he said.
TDU director Mike Turtur said about 6000 would ride in this year’s Bupa Challenge.
The TDU is on January 16-24. To register for the Bupa Challenge on Friday January 22, go to www.tourdownunder. com.au; to help the Cancer Council on the ride, register at rideforareason.com.au
