Tokyo 2020: Joshua Bell shooting for Olympic skeet spot

It started as a father and son bonding exercise but now Joshua Bell has the chance to turn his passion in this sport into a ticket to the Tokyo Olympics.

At first, Joshua Bell used to shoot because it was a great way to spend time with his dad.

Now he’s got a shot at making the Tokyo Olympics later this year.

Bell, a plumber by trade who now works in construction, is gearing up for his final selection event for the Tokyo Games.

The tournament will be held at the his home range at the Gregory Hill’s shooters home range - the Cecil Hills Clay Target Club at Sydney International Shooting Centre from March 20-22.

Bell, who is chasing a spot at the Olympics in skeet shooting, rates himself an outside chance of making the team as he goes into the tournament in second place behind Queenslander Paul Adams.

“At the moment there is only one spot so I may miss out,” Bell said.

“I’m second at the moment with just one selection event to go but I’ll give it my best shot. You never know.”

Bell started shooting with his father when just 12 but said it can be difficult to juggle full time work with his sporting passion.

“It’s hard to juggle because I work six days a week,’’ he said.

“But in the leadup to a big event I train three times a week.’’

Australia will send a team to Tokyo of around 480 athletes with less than 30 selected for the games to date.

Among them are canoe slalom paddlers, sailors and artistic swimmers.
