Tantrums, tears and trophies.

Netflix has dropped the first trailer for its forthcoming tennis show ‘Break Point’ and Nick Kyrgios is front and centre.

Created by the producers of F1 show Drive to Survive, the show will premiere on January 13 2023, just days before the Australian Open.

Much like its F1 predecessor, Break Point will give sport fans unparalleled access to the lives of the biggest names in tennis.

Kyrgios is joined by compatriots Thanasi Kokkinakis and Ajla Tomljanovic in the show which also features Stefanos Tsitsipas, Aryna Sabalenka, Matteo Berrettini and a wealth of other stars.

Given the global popularity of Drive to Survive and explosion of new F1 fans, the hope is that Netflix’s collaboration with the ATP and WTA reaches a new demographic of fans and amplifies the personalities of the sport’s ‘next gen’.

Tennis as a sport has, for too long, depended on the likes of Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Rafa Nadal when it comes to star power and ticket sales.

The sport needed an injection of modernisation and content which allows existing and new fans to get up front and personal with top players.

“It’s hard to imagine another sport which has been so dominated by a handful of individuals for so long,” executive producer James Gay-Rees said.

“But they are at the end of the cycle – barring, obviously, Novak and Rafa, to some extent. The changing of the guard is happening.”

“The timing was really good. Because I love tennis, but I’m like, ‘Who is Tsitsipas?’ Do you know what I mean? In all honesty. But actually, you realise, ’My God, he’s No. 5 in the world. He’s a really, seriously, good tennis player and he’s a really interesting guy. And I’d like to know more about him.”

“Because all I’ve heard for the last 15-20 years is: ‘Roger, Roger, Roger. Serena, Serena, Serena.’ For a reason, right? Obviously we’re not disputing that, because they’re legends and icons. But I think it was really exciting shining a light on a new generation.”

For the players it’s about doing all they can to lift the profile of their sport.

“I think it’s going to make a great show, and I think we gave them some good content,” Canadian world No 6 Felix Auger-Aliassime, who is also in the show, said.

“For me the main goal is that it can help tennis. It can help tennis overall. That would be amazing if we could see a rise in the number of fans and attention for our sport by airing this series.”

For superstar Ons Jabeur, the reality series is all about showing the world that tennis players are human too.

“I just want to make fans see what we are living every day to remember we are just human beings after all,” she said.

“I want them to see what we go through every day with the practices, with the preparation, with all the stress. You can feel and just know that we’re human beings and just support us no matter what.”
