Roger Federer is through to the fourth round of another Australian Open, but his young son stole the show after making a surprise appearance in the Swiss master’s players’ box at Rod Laver Arena.

Federer cruised to a straight sets win over American Taylor Fritz as he continues his quest to defend his men’s singles crown at Melbourne Park.

But some of the limelight in the win was taken by four-year-old Lennart — or Lenny, for short — who watched the first set and proved a little annoying for Federer’s coach Ivan Ljubicic, who copped a few pokes in the face sitting alongside.

“I didn’t even know he was going to come to the stadium,” Federer said.

“When I peeked over and he was sitting there I was like, “OK, we have a special guest for me.

“Back in the day you were playing in front of your parents, you are in front of your parents, you are in front of your friends, special. It is famous people, musicians. There he goes. The coach is being very serious, I love that. You know, at the end it is playing in front of legends is a thrill. And at the end it is back to basics. It is playing in front of your family and that’s what it was today. For me it was a very special match and I’m happy Lenny was there.”

After Federer took the first set 6-2 in just 20 minutes, Fritz found his feet and fought back to push the 20-time Grand Slam winner who eventually took the second set 7-5.

But Federer again proved why he is the third seed at the tournament with a 6-2 third set triumph in just 26 minutes.

“I wanted to get out the blocks quickly because I knew of the threat of Taylor,” Federer said.

“His possibilities on the serve and what he could do on the serve and what he could do on the return, especially the second serve. I think I had extra focus to do to really make sure that I got off to the good start and I did. Then the second serve was tight, it was tough. There were a few chances but he protected the serve well.
