TWELVE-time grand slam winner Novak Djokovic says Lleyton Hewitt should consider making a singles comeback after defeating the Serb in their Tie Break Tens battle at Margaret Court Arena.

The Australian veteran, who still plays doubles and will compete at the Australian Open with Sam Groth, defeated Djokovic 10-6 in their match-up on Wednesday night.

Hewitt, 36, then went on to nearly cause another major upset against world No.1 Rafael Nadal, pushing last year’s Australian Open finalist to 13-11.

“I told him to come back, I really mean that,” Djokovic said with a smile.

“I know he’s been playing doubles but he’s still on in singles that’s for sure.”

Former world No.1 Djokovic was enjoying his second hit-out of the day after playing his first competitive match at Kooyong earlier on Wednesday.

He made a triumphant return to the court against world No.5 Dominic Thiem with a straight sets 6-1 6-4 victory.

Djokovic conceded after that match his elbow injury is still not 100 per cent despite being able to play without pain.

“I’m just happy to be back on the court, it’s been six months since I’ve played any competitive play,” he said.

“It felt great to be back and to play without the pain and that’s what matters.

“Hopefully I’ll be able to put in some practice hours in the next few days and be ready for the (Australian) Open.”

Tomas Berdych went on to win the Tie Break Tens format, pocketing a cool $250,000 for his victory over Nadal in the final.

Thiem, Nick Kyrgios, Milos Raonic — a late inclusion for injured Stan Wawrinka — and Lucas Pouille also featured.

Tie Break Tens is a format that consists only of tie breaks, no games or sets. The winner is the first to reach 10 points with a margin of two or until a margin of two is reached.
