John McEnroe and Nick Kyrgios go back a long way.

From previously trading barbs to teaming up at the Laver Cup, you could tell during their on-court interview on Tuesday night that they have genuine respect and care for each other.

McEnroe made a point to praise Kyrgios for the work he has done in raising money for the Australian Bushfire Relief.

Kyrgios is donating $200 for every ace he hits during the summer of tennis to help those in need.

“The way you led the way for the bushfire relief thing and everything you’ve done, I have to tell you, well done, man,” McEnroe said.

“Absolutely outstanding effort and I know a lot of people share the same view but I wanted to tell you personally that I’m proud of you.”

So impressed was the American, he decided to make his own pledge.

McEnroe said he will donate $1,000 for every set Kyrgios wins during the Australian Open.

Kyrgios was clearly moved by the gesture, telling McEnroe, “I appreciate that - you’re gonna make me tear up again,” he said.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Kyrgios continued to praise McEnroe.

“Yeah, it was awesome. Obviously I felt like he wanted to help. I mean, I’m sure a lot of people appreciate that.”

Kyrgios said the gesture wouldn’t lead to him putting added pressure on himself.

“Not at all. I want to continue to do what I can,” he said.

“I’m not even thinking about my next round. I’m going to do all the right things (on Wednesday), recover, go again.

“Hopefully I can keep serving well. Hopefully I can win more sets.”
