NICK Kyrgios’ outstanding run at the US hardcourt circuit has ended with a controversial second-round loss to Borna Coric at the Southern & Western Open in Cincinnati.
Kyrgios’ racquet-smashing implosion after losing the first set to the rising Croat star set the tone for an explosive clash eventually claimed by Coric 7-6 (7-2) 4-6 7-6 (8-6).
In a display similar to Marcos Baghdatis’ effort to destroy three racquets at the 2012 Australian Open, Kyrgios mangled three frames.
He managed to regain composure to push the match with an excellent second-set display, only to let the contest slip away after holding a 5-3 lead and squandering a match point in the third set tie-break.

There was better news for Bernard Tomic and Daria Gavrilova as Sam Stosur and John Millman bowed out.
Tomic claimed his highest ranked scalp in seven months, beating World No 11 David Goffin.
The Queenslander’s 3-6 7-5 6-4 success marked his first win over a player since the top 12 since January’s Brisbane International where he toppled Kei Nishikori — his next opponent.
Qualifier Millman was beaten 7-5 6-1 by Austrian eighth seed Dominic Thiem.
Gavrilova thumped Serena Williams’ Olympic Games conqueror Elina Svitolina 6-2 6-2 but Stosur was denied 7-6 (13-11) 6-3 by Czech veteran Barbora Strycova.
