Australian duo Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson have etched their name into the history books after a stunning US Open run.

Aussie duo become US Open champions

Australian duo Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson have clinched their first grand slam crown after a stellar win in the US Open men’s doubles final.

The seventh seeded Aussie pairing proved too strong as they took care of business against German duo Tim Puetz and Kevin Krawietz to claim the 6-4 7-6 victory.

Reaching the final saw them snap a 28-year drought as they became the first Australian doubles duo since Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge in 1996 to make it into the deciding contest.

They also become the first all-Aussie pair to make back-to-back grand slam finals since the Woodies lost the 2000 French Open before winning Wimbledon.

Purcell and Thompson went agonisingly close to winning their first grand slam title at Wimbledon but couldn’t get the job done as they left centre court with a runners up trophy.

Thankfully in New York they were able to put the heartbreak behind them.

Flashbacks would have been front of mind for the pairing after they faltered in the second set as they let two match points get away when they held a 5-3 lead.

In a flash the German pairing had levelled proceedings and sent the second set into a tiebreaker.

But unlike Wimbledon, the Aussies held their nerve with Purcell putting it away with an ace to capture the crown.

“To be grand slam champions, it has a great ring to it, especially after what happened at Wimbledon,” Thompson said after the match.

“It got a bit tense there at the end, with match points, but we stuck with it and we got there in the end.”

Purcell added: “It definitely felt better serving out the tiebreaker than it did serving in the 5-4 game.”

The win capped off a monumental run for the Australian duo who saved two match points in their second round win against Australian John-Patrick Smith and his German partner Andrea Mies.

Since that contest that didn’t drop a set as they eliminated three-seeded opponents which included the top seeded pairing.

It’s the first grand slam victory for Thompson, while the win makes it two slam crowns for Purcell after he won at Wimbledon in 2022 with Matt Ebden.

While they’ll no doubt celebrate the historic victory in style, the duo will be back in action in Valencia next week as Australia’s Davis Cup campaign gets underway.
