AUSTRALIA’S best efforts to claim British no.1 Johanna Konta have fallen on deaf ears.
For the second year running Konta has rocketed into the round of 16 while local hopes fall by the wayside.
Throughout the week, broadcasters have been quick to remind tennis fans that Konta was actually born in Sydney, making her almost a local.
WOMEN’S WRAP: Wozniacki, Cibulkova gone
However, it has left some overseas media unsure what Konta’s real first name is.
“I’ve been confused since I’ve been in Australia about the pronunciation of your first name. Is it Sydney Born?,” one reporter said in Konta’s post-match press conference after her win against Caroline Wozniacki.
After laughing off the question at first, Konta replied, “Yeah, it was quite awkward actually on court.
“The announcer or the presenter on court ... I think he tried to get the crowd involved. Is she from Great Britain? Is she from Australia? I’m like, This is kind of awkward.
“But, yeah, my place of birth is no secret. Also where I call home is no secret either. Yeah, everyone’s pretty clear where they stand with me.”
