‘Have to frame it’: Aussie Aleksandar Vukic celebrates biggest win of his career

Aussie journeyman Aleksandar Vukic is celebrating the biggest win of his career following his huge upset of Sebastian Korda.

Kokkinakis' act of true sportsmanship

Aussie journeyman Aleksandar Vukic pulled off the biggest win of his career after upsetting 22nd seed Sebastian Korda at the Australian Open.

The world No. 68 Aussie was on the brink at two sets to one down, but with the full force of a raucous home crowd behind him, Vukic found an extra gear to grind out a 3-6 6-3 3-6 7-5 6-4 win over more than three hours.

The duo were forced to sit out a two-hour rain delay mid-match before returning to Kia Arena after 7pm local time.

The 28-year-old Sydneysider, who turned pro back in 2018 and has banked $3.8 million across his career, called it the best win of his career as he reached the third round of a grand slam tournament for the first time.

“I think so,” he said in his post-match press conference. “I think in terms of the situation, in terms of the atmosphere, in terms of everything.

“I think being down two sets to one against a great player in Korda, and fighting back when things weren’t looking too good for me then and making my first third round, yeah, it’s got to be the best or one of the best, for sure.”

Vukic, who is currently ranked 68th, achieved his career-best ranking of No. 48 back in August 2023.

He faced a huge task against American Korda, a former Australian Open quarter-finalist and the son of Petr Korda, who won the Melbourne Park title back in 1998.

Korda, 24, is also the brother of LPGA Tour superstar Nelly Korda.

After the upset win, Vukic revealed one of his happiest memories is a photo of himself as a 10-year-old attending the Australian Open he keeps beside his bed.

He’s now going to need another frame to capture this momentous achievement, which has also earned him a minimum $290,000 payday for reaching the third round, where he will face Brit Jack Draper.

“Yeah, I’m going to have to find a photo somewhere and frame it maybe,” he said.

“I think I have a photo still next to my bed of that. Yeah, for sure just playing this tonight with a lot of my family there, yeah, it’s a nice moment. It’s a nice moment.”

Draper overcame another Aussie, Thanasi Kokkinakis, in his second straight five-set match at this year’s tournament.

Vukic’s win over Korda made him the first Australian man to reach the third round this year.

Veteran tennis journalist José Morgado summed it all up with one word: “Wow.”
