From underarm serves to awkward interviews, recap the most bizarre moments from their Kooyong Classic clash.
THE UNDERARM SERVE
Was it cheeky or genius?
After playing some brilliant tennis throughout the match, Bernard Tomic ensured his performance would be talked about for a host of other reasons after he decided to serve underarm on match point.
However, this wasn’t the traditional underarm serve (even though there is nothing traditional about an underarm serve).
Tomic also hit it through his legs, with the result being an ace.
The move certainly generated plenty of opinion on social media.

‘HE CAN HAVE IT’
Kyrgios has seen plenty of strange moments on the tennis court. But even he was a little bemused by Tomic’s decision to go underarm.
“I honestly didn’t know what was going on,” Kyrgios said after the match.
“I looked down, I looked up and he was doing some weird motion and all of a sudden the ball popped out between his legs and I thought ‘Oh, he wants it, he can have it’.”
KYRGIOS DOESN’T CARE ABOUT THE BALLS
Tomic created a media storm on Tuesday when he slammed the Australian Open’s decision to go from Wilson balls to Dunlop.
“I don’t know what the Australian Open has done, but it is terrible,” Tomic said of the balls.
“I don’t know too much (about the balls), but I don’t feel like it is that good of a ball. I think they’re pretty cheap from what I’ve heard.”
Kyrgios was asked his opinion after the match and gave a short, sharp and blunt answer.
“The balls are OK. I don’t really care much,” he said.
WHEN THINGS GOT REALLY WEIRD
Following the match, sideline reporter Tiffany Cherry checked in with Kyrgios to see how he was recovering from an off-season spider bite.
She then asked Tomic how he was feeling and, while it seemed like a straight forward question, it didn’t draw a straight forward answer.
Cherry: You’ve now played three matches. The second one was only a small one but you said you were pretty tired … how do you feel now.
Tomic: Wasn’t there some guy that complained about a spider in Perth and called the Police or something? I don’t know, the Police came to a household and the guy was trying to beat up a spider the same day as Nick got … it just flashed in my head.
Cherry: I’ve got no idea
Tomic: I just didn’t want to answer the question.
Cherry: I got that one.
KYRGIOS TAKES A SWIPE AT THE MEDIA
There was already plenty of interest in the first clash between Kyrgios and Tomic and that only increased after Tomic’s day one win.
Speaking after the match, Tomic said Kyrgios needed the hit more than him because he was “a little bit mentally struggling right now.”
Tomic went on to say he hoped Kyrgios took the clash seriously.
When Kyrgios was asked if the comments from his rival fired him up, he took a swipe at the media.
“Not at all. The media is always going to paint what they want people to see,” he said.
“I know BT (Tomic), we text. I know we are both on the same page. I understand the media, the bigger the story the bigger the pay cheque.”
TOMIC’S SET ONE ASSESSMENT
Tomic was absolutely on fire to start the match, playing some brilliant tennis on his way to taking the opening set 6-3.
During an on court interview at the end of the set, he was asked to give his take on his own performance.
“I think I missed one ball. I think one, yeah.”
Now that’s confidence.
