Alex de Minaur has had his game exposed by the world’s best, even with the cloud of illness hanging over the frightening Italian.

Jannik Sinner dealt Aussie hope Alex de Minaur a cold reality check in a one-sided quarter-final at the Australian Open.

Having risen to No. 8 in the ATP rankings, De Minaur carried the hope of the host nation as he took on the world No. 1.

In the end, it was a hopeless mismatch as the Italian romped to victory 6-3 6-2 6-1 in just one hour, 48 minutes on court.

While the Demon at least cracked the final eight of his home grand slam for the first time, he also learned exactly the level he needs to reach if the 25-year-old is to prevail in one of the sport’s major tournaments.

Defending champion Sinner marches on, overcoming pre-match talk of an illness to set-up a semi-final against American Ben Shelton on Friday.

Novak Djokovic will face second seed Alexander Zverev in the other semi-final after the Serbian continued to attract the headlines at Melbourne Park after his four-set masterclass to beat Carlos Alcaraz in his quarter-final.

In the women’s draw, second seed Iga Swiatek faced her own controversy over a double bounce in her straight sets quarter-final victory against Emma Navarro.

The Polish star will take on Madison Keys in the final four, following the American’s 3-6 6-3 6-4 triumph over Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.

Australia at least enjoyed success in the mixed doubles, with all-Aussie pairings Olivia Gadecki and John Peers plus John-Patrick Smith and Kimberley Birrell both winning their respective semi-finals on Wednesday.
