Australian Dylan Alcott on verge of quad grand slam after taking Wimbledon doubles title

Australia’s Dylan Alcott has added another grand slam title to his resume, and has moved one step closer to a rare slice of history.

Victoria’s Dylan Alcott has posted another significant grand slam milestone after forging to Wimbledon’s first quad wheelchair singles title.

A Paralympic gold medallist in basketball in 2008, Alcott notched his ninth major tennis singles title with a runaway 6-0 6-2 triumph over Briton Andy Lapthorne.

Alcott pocketed $61,000 for the victory after overcoming a serving lapse late in the second set, when he was broken to love while attempting to close out the contest.

The Australian broke back immediately snare a piece of All England Club history.

Alcott struggled with his emotions post-match as he teased Wimbledon officials about becoming a member of the world’s most prestigious club “now that I’m a champion.”

“We weren’t allowed to play Wimbledon for the last few years,” he said, before revealing he intends to celebrate by “getting sauced” with his friends.

“To come out here as a young kid born in a wheelchair in Australia, this is a dream come true.

“Thanks to Wimbledon for putting this on. Look at how many people are here.

“I remember about five years ago, playing with Andy around the world, about three people came and they were our parents.

“Not only does it change our lives, it changes the lives of little kids with a disability.“

Alcott, 28, owns five Australian, two US, one French and one Wimbledon title.

If he claims the US Open in September, he will complete the first quad grand slam.

Alcott and Lapthorne combined to win the doubles championship against Japan’s Koji Sunego and American David Wagner.

Doubles victory carried a $30,000 bounty, to be shared by Alcott and Lapthorne.
