Winx trainer Chris Waller will start mapping out autumn program but no decision yet on overseas trip

SUPERMARE Winx will resume pre-training with trainer Chris Waller indicating what her autumn program will likely be and what it will take for her to travel overseas.

Why Winx isn't like other horses

SUPERMARE Winx resumes pre-training on Monday, with trainer Chris Waller suggesting she will again resume in the Apollo Stakes at Randwick in February.

Waller is still noncommittal as to whether Winx will go overseas next year and said she would need to be at the peak of her form to do so.

He indicated she would follow the same pattern as in the past two years, running in the three races she has won in the past two years to kick off her autumn campaign — the Apollo (1400m, February 17), the Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m at Randwick, March 3) and the George Ryder Stakes (1500m at Rosehill, March 24).

He said two Caulfield races, the Orr Stakes (1400m, February 10) and Futurity Stakes (1600m, February 24), were his other options.

Waller said the George Ryder was the pivotal run to decide Winx’s path.

After that, the camp would have to decide whether to run in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on April 14, which she won last year fourth-up, or start planning to take her to England.

“I want her at her best, her very best, if she is going overseas to represent Australia,” Waller said.

The other option after the George Ryder was to stop the campaign and start planning for a fourth consecutive Cox Plate victory.

Winx’s pre-training will take place at what Waller called a “boutique secret location”, where she will spend three to four weeks.

She has won her past 22 starts and her $15,627,925 in prizemoney is the most won by an Australian horse.

Waller said he paid a visit to Winx recently and was delighted with her condition.

“There is still a long way to go,” he said.

“I’ve been out to see her and she looks great.

“It’s probably the best she has been in the paddock in her career, so that’s a good starting point.”
