JAMEKA POWERS INTO HISTORY BOOKS

The Herald Sun’s Michael Manley also dissects the merits of each runner’s performance in the $3 million staying feature.

1. JAMEKA

Nick Hall: “I’ve got to really thank Ciaron Maher and the stable. He’s done an exceptional job ... he’s such a great trainer of campaign horses. The way he’s prepped this run by run, and he’s won it.”

MANLEY’S ANALYSIS: A dominant victory from this star staying mare aided by a superb ride from Nick Hall. Hall used her in the early stages to take up a forward position and then controlled the race. He pushed her forward before the turn and had the race won a long way out.

2. SCOTTISH

Kerrin McEvoy: “He sort of jumped up in the air which had me on the backfoot, then he raced really keenly through the first couple of furlongs. I got into a nice rhythm outside the front two then slipped forward. He’s done a remarkable job to hold on and run as well as he did.”

MANLEY’S ANALYSIS: Made an early move with 1400m to go going round the field to take the lead. Kept fighting but couldn’t match the closing sprint of Jameka but his effort was still sound.

3. EXOSPHERIC

Damien Oliver: “I was able to get into a nice moving position coming to the turn, I was only a couple of lengths off Jameka and thought I was a real chance. But when she kicked with the pull in the weights, she just kicked too strong but I thought it was an excellent run.”

MANLEY’S ANALYSIS: Settled worse than midfield and ran home strongly to gain a placing in an encouraging run.

4. ALMOONQITH

Michael Walker: “Probably should have run second. Got held up at a crucial point of the race but other than the winner, it’s probably a Melbourne Cup trial.”

MANLEY’S ANALYSIS: Massive effort producing the fastest last 200m of 11.95 seconds to gain fourth in a superb Melbourne Cup trial.

5. REAL LOVE

Craig Williams: “She jumped really well today and I was stuck wide so I had to go forward. I got cover from the wind when I needed to but being that bit closer, it probably cost her acceleration when they got around the turn, but she ran on really nice.”

MANLEY’S ANALYSIS: Things didn’t pan out well early. She was forced to lead and kept that spot until Scottish took over with 1200m to go. She looked under pressure a long way out and battled on well considering the run she had had.

Jameka powered clear of the field in the straight.

6. OUR IVANHOWE

Dwayne Dunn: “He ran well. I didn’t begin that well and we got pushed back along the rail but he went like a two-miler, and if we get a wet track, we’re back in business.”

MANLEY’S ANALYSIS: Never looked a winning chance settling worse than midfield. Best part of his race was the last 200m.

7. SIR ISAAC NEWTON

Colm O’Donoghue: “He ran a good race. He’s used to a strong tempo. He just needs to learn to relax and control that speed but he’s run a good race considering he pulled so hard.”

MANLEY’S ANALYSIS: Took up a nice midfield position and came into the race strongly from the 600m mark. He looked a winning chance but just battled home over the concluding stages.

8. VENGEUR MASQUE

Patrick Moloney: “It was a terrific run. I had to sort of snag him from the gate but got across and he travelled really well for me in the run but I just got held up at a crucial stage on the back of our Ivanhowe. If he gets out earlier, he probably runs top five ... he’s a nice stayer of the future.”

MANLEY’S ANALYSIS: Encouraging run from 78 rated horse. Always out the back and was held up when he wanted to start his run at the top of the straight. Finished off strongly and is a horse on the up.

9. DE LITTLE ENGINE

Ben Thompson: “He was brilliant. He really ran up to his Turnbull (Stakes) start. Once he got clear air, I had a really good run from the 400 and his last furlong was super. He’s on track for a race like the Lexus (Stakes) and he’s ticking along beautifully.”

MANLEY’S ANALYSIS: Settled last in the run. Kept finding trouble in the straight and only found clear running over the last 200m where he ran home solidly.

10. SIR JOHN HAWKWOOD

Blake Spriggs: “I’m extremely proud of him, he did a good job. I was following the right horses. I got a bit of a squeeze on the first turn which just got him over-racing a little bit but I was very proud.”

MANLEY’S ANALYSIS: Mid-field throughout and stayed there.

11. PREFERMENT

Hugh Bowman: “Had to do a bit too much work in the run.”

MANLEY’S ANALYSIS: Had to work hard in the first half of the race to settle in second placing. Looked to travel well in the run but was the first horse beaten. Had excuses but he’s not the Preferment of old.

12. TALLY

Brenton Avdulla: “Probably just overdid it early. I was able to get across and get a good spot but probably didn’t have the horse underneath me.”

MANLEY’S ANALYSIS: Worked to lead in the first half of the race and then was eased to settle just off the speed. Tried to stay with the leading group but was beaten a long way out.

13. ARTICUS

Zac Purton: “He worked himself up in front of the big crowd pre- race and he was just a bit keen.”

MANLEY’S ANALYSIS: Settled midfield. Made a run out wide before the turn and looked to be coming into the race nicely but didn’t finish it off.

14. PEMBERLEY

Ben Allen: “We were a bit further back than we wanted to be, we wanted to be midfield but he just jumped away too slow.”

MANLEY’S ANALYSIS: Out the back throughout and stayed there.

15. SACRED MASTER

Tommy Berry: “Copped a lot of trouble past the winning post the first time, it got him pulling a little bit and they went too slow for us.”

MANLEY’S ANALYSIS: Another who was never in it.

16. GO DREAMING

Katelyn Mallyon: “He went really well. The race didn’t really suit him.”

MANLEY’S ANALYSIS: Gave his connections a thrill by leading early. He then took up a nice spot but was beaten a long way out.
