Is still a maiden after five starts but she is bred to stay — her dam Bulla Borghese won the Victoria Oaks — and is finally getting out to a middle distance here. She comes off a solid effort over 1600m at Gosford last start when she closed late to be just beaten by Mauzel. In a very open race she represents good value.

I part-own her so must concede I am biased but I do like the way she sets up for this and the $21 looks a good each-way gamble.

Is a former French gelding with proven form lines at today’s trip and beyond. Looks to have been set for this race for some time and Tommy Berry appointment is a shrewd one.

Race 2, No. 8

Won a C2 at Beaumont two starts back then added a Bm67 at the ATC Kembla meeting 11 days later and now into the G3 Carbine Club. She’s a progressive filly and I love the way she attacks the line. She’s had some experience in black-type races, notably that herculean fourth in the Lexus Hybrid on Cup day at Flemington.

Race 7, No. 2

Worked home strongly behind Tarzino in the Rosehill Guineas after being checked in the straight. Will be tough to turn the tables on the outstanding Victorian, Vanbrugh’s best is usually reserved for Randwick. Has the added bonus of Hugh Bowman in the saddle, which adds to his each-way appeal.

Backed into favouritism after her excellent second in the Golden Slipper, and the money should continue to come for the David Vandyke filly. The fact she ran first-up in the Slipper suggests the Sires and Champagne are the targets and not afterthoughts.

First things first — favourite Kaiser Franz is a talented animal but something seems to go wrong for him every start. Plenty of value outside of him, in an open race. Collateral knuckled down really well last start and with even luck, will be in the finish. Looks to be a gelding on the way up, when quite a few of the rest of these are either plodding or on the way down.
