TEXT messages obtained from a notorious racing figure are believed to be central to an explosive Racing Victoria investigation into alleged widespread doping.

Lawyers for several of the parties involved are aware of the sensational nature of the ongoing probe.

RV chief steward Terry Bailey said he was unable to comment because the investigation is underway and incomplete.

The Herald Sun understands a number of key racing figures could be embroiled in a rapidly broadening investigation into claims of race-day doping.

Caulfield trainer Robert Smerdon is currently being investigated regarding the alleged raceday treatment of Lovani, who was scratched by the order of stewards at Flemington last month.

The Herald Sun believes Lovani was observed allegedly being given an illegal oral administration in the Flemington stalls soon before she was due to race.

Stewards have not disclosed how Lovani’s handlers were monitored.

Stewards have interviewed several licensed personnel since the investigation started.

Evidence has been taken from members of Smerdon’s staff.

It is now believed other training operations — and high-ranking racing identities — could be drawn into the investigation.

No charges have yet been laid.

Some of the text messages uncovered are believed to be several years old.
