SuperCoach Racing formguide: Round 6 preview and trade advice

Derby Day is the biggest day on the racing calendar and a record score is on the cards in Round 6 if you can pick the right horses.

Derby Day and a plethora of Group 1 races can provide a big rebound after a tough round at the Valley last week.

The team managed just winner last week, albeit from captain Lys Gracieux in the Cox Plate, with several near misses.

There are four Group 1 features at Flemington, plus the Golden Eagle at Rosehill, with the Coolmore Stud Stakes and Victoria Derby for the three-year-olds offering the best value.

Don’t ignore the Group 2 races. There are four of them in total and some discount horses available.

Note, each day of the Flemington carnival — Derby Day (Saturday), Cup Day (Tuesday), Stakes Day (Thursday) and Stakes Day (Saturday week) — is its own round.

MUST-HAVE HORSE

THOUGHT OF THAT ($125K)

The Derby second favourite can make the headlines for the right reasons. He’s won his past two starts by a combined 12 lengths and, even without Linda Meech, will be tough to chase down.

RACES TO TARGET

COOLMORE STUD STAKES & VICTORIA DEBRY

The cream should rise to the top. The Manikato Stakes last week was a non-event for BIVOUAC ($350k). EXCEEDANCE ($225k) has been prepared for this race since the Golden Rose, and LIBERTINI ($275k) is also worth some thought back to 1200m. In the Derby, SHADOW HERO ($175,000) and THOUGHT OF THAT ($125,000) have the clear best ratings over the rest of the field.

BEST PREMIUM

TREKKING ($450K)

The emerging sprinter finished ahead of PIERATA ($475k) in The Everest and can beat him again in the Redzel Stakes, despite the bookies thinking otherwise. There’s a good reason to pick him, even though the Redzel is offering Group 2 points, if you can squeeze him in.

RACE TO AVOID

CANTALA STAKES

Impossible race with NIGHT’S WATCH leading the market at $6.50 and four runners — BEST OF DAYS, CLIFF’S EDGE, SIKANDARABAD and CHIEF IRONSIDE — backing up from a high-rating Crystal Mile.

BEST VALUE

ZOUTORI ($200K) & FLIT ($200K)

The pair are short favourites in races 1 and 2, both Group 2s, and can get the day off to a great start.
