SuperCoach Racing formguide: Round 4 preview and trade advice

Last weekend provided a scoring bonanza in SuperCoach Racing but Round 4 could be the hardest so far. Here are our top picks and tactics.

Santa Ana Lane eyes Everest redemption

There were some massive scores in Round 3, but our expectations will have to be set lower with just two races offering Group 1 points this weekend — the Caulfield Cup and The Everest.

Of the two, The Everest is the race to have multiple runners. I’ve chosen SANTA ANA LANE ($500,000), and the well-backed ARCADIA QUEEN ($375,000) is a steal.

However, it would remiss of me to go without a runner in the cup even though anything could happen.

There are two Group 2 and three Group 3 races at Caulfield, while The Kosciuszko at Randwick has been assessed as a Group 3.

MUST-HAVE HORSE

WARNING ($100,000)

The Derby contender won impressively on Turnbull Stakes day and also avoided a price increase.

PREMIUM PICK

SANTA ANA LANE ($500,000)

The top-priced horses haven’t been kind to me so far, but with only two races offering Group 1 points this week, I have to pick the country’s best sprinter to win The Everest.

RACE TO TARGET

TRISTARC STAKES (CAULFIELD)

Group 2 races are also scarce this week and I want to get involved here. POHUTUKAWA ($275,000) and ANGELIC RULER ($225,000) were added to the black book after eye-catching runs last start.

THE DILEMMA

ROYAL MEETING ($225,000)

The Godolphin raider has two wins from as many starts, including a Group 1 in France, but hasn’t raced in more than 12 months and is returning from a throat operation. He could blow the opposition away and he’s an attractive price to find out.

CAP SQUEEZE

BRUTAL ($400,000)

Should be winning the Sydney Stakes at Randwick, but there’s no room for him at $400,000 in a Group 3 race.

HAPPY CLAPPER ($475,000)

Like Brutal, the veteran is the favourite in a Group 3 but will cost near top-dollar.

RACE TO AVOID

CAULFIELD SPRINT

Big risk to sacrifice some Group 2 points when there are so few of them, but this a tricky contest. MISS LEONIDAS is the favourite after racing out of her skin in the Group 1 Moir Stakes last start, but her starting price that night was $31.

JOCKEY TIP

TOMMY BERRY

He has three favourites at Randwick (BRUTAL, HAPPY CLAPPER and VICTOREM) as well as the second fancy in The Everest, PIERATA.
