SuperCoach Racing Blackbook: The stars and flops from Round 1

While some horses enhanced their standing in Round 2 of SuperCoach, there were others who failed to deliver. Which ones should you follow or forget?

How To Play SuperCoach Racing

The second round SuperCoach Racing generated some huge scores but there were some performances that fell short of expectations.

Chris Vernuccio picks out which horses to follow and forget.

FLEMINGTON

TURNBULL STAKES, GROUP 1

Mystic Journey (14 points) was given no mathematical chance of winning with such negative tactics in a very slow race, which was costly for those who had her in their stables at $500,000. She recorded the best closing sectionals but the run didn’t give any indication whether she can run out a strong 2040m in the Cox Plate (Round 5). Finche (32 points)

was terrific and improving with each run, a big chance in the Caulfield Cup (Round 4). Mr Quickie (4 points) was the second most popular horse but beat just one runner home. The tempo was also against the four-year-old, so he could rebound in the Caulfield Cup.

GILGAI STAKES, GROUP 2

This was a race Sunlight (32 points) had to win given she had the fitness edge on Santa Ana Lane (24 points). She controlled the speed and could have won by further. Santa Ana Lane will elevate off this run in The Everest (Round 4). Third placegetter Zoutori (18 points) showed he’s up to Group 1 standard but his next start could be the Group 2 Linlithgow Stakes on Derby Day (Round 6).

BLAZER STAKES, GROUP 2

On face value, Fidelia (10 points) was disappointing but she raced to her get-back pattern and finished off with the best last 600m and 400m of the meeting. That’s not necessarily enough to win at this level where these mares are so evenly matched. Fidelia’s best form is at 1600m but Pohutukawa (24 points) and Angelic Ruler (18 points) arealso ready for the mile. Aristia (12 points) is heading in the right direction but needs at least 2000m to show her best.

THE BART CUMMINGS, GROUP 3

This was a huge performance by Surprise Baby (24 points) given where he was positioned in another slowly run race at Flemington. However, the bookies have overreacted by installing him as Melbourne Cup (Round 7) favourite.

SUPER IMPOSE STAKES, LISTED

All honours to the Warning (18 points). The three-year-old gelding had to wait for a gap to open but still won comfortably. On track for the Derby but the Sydney form is stronger.

RANDWICK

EPSOM HANDICAP, GROUP 1

Kolding (40 points) displayed great tenacity to fight off Te Akau Shark (32 points), with the pair running away from the rest of the field. Kolding is likely to head to the Golden Eagle (Round 6) and Te Akau Shark to the Cox Plate (Round 5). Star Of The Seas (24 points) was gallant in third and can break through this campaign in an easier race.

PREMIERE STAKES, GROUP 2

Brutal (32 points) upstaged Everest contender Classique Legend (18 points). His aim has been the Golden Eagle (Round 6) but The Everest is now in the picture. Osborne Bulls (12 points) pulled up lame and is a doubtful Everest starter.

TOP HOOPS

James McDonald rode four winners and collected 17 points to take the honours again. Jordan Childs picked up 10 points after notching two winners at Flemington, which included Surprise Baby.
