Cheapies are something we all need to fill the back end of our stables and these should give you great value for money.
NOTE: Horses are ordered from cheapest to most expensive.
PROFONDO ($50,000)
Trainer: Richard Litt. Career: 2:1-1-0
Only had two starts but there was a lot to like about this expensive colt in his debut win at Kensington, which was followed by a close second in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes on Saturday. He’ll keep improving and is the best horse you can get at under $100,000 by a long shot.
Target races: Spring Champion Stakes, Victoria Derby
ART CADEAU ($150,000)
Trainer: Terry Robinson. Career: 11:5-6-0
Art Cadeau looks the horse to beat in The Kosciuszko after it was announced that It’s Me wouldn’t line up. He’s an ultra consistent horse that has never finished worse than second in 11 starts and is a cheapie at $150,000.
Target race: The Kosciuszko
IT’S ME ($150,000)
Trainer: Brett Cavanough. Career: 4:4-0-0
It’s Me wouldn’t be out of place in some of the top races this spring. Reports from the Cavanough stable indicate she’s returned in good order but won’t be ready in time for The Kosciuszko. She should be winning most races she contests this spring if placed right.
Target race: The Invitation

NANCHO ($175,000)
Trainer: Anthony Cummings. Career: 19:11-2-1
This German Group 1 winner failed to fire in the Chelmsford Stakes but he had not raced in nearly two years. Anthony Cummings will be setting him for the major races this spring so he’s great value.
Target races: Caulfield Cup, Melbourne Cup
SIGNORA NERA ($175,000)
Trainer: Chris Waller. Career: 15:3-1-4
Group 1 placed as a three-year-old and she demolished a handy of field mares first-up at Kembla Grange. Signora Nera is in markets for races like the Empire Rose Stakes and Caulfield Cup.
Target races: Empire Rose, Caulfield Cup, The Invitation
MR BRIGHTSIDE ($175,000)
Trainer: Ben & JD Hayes. Career: 6:4-1-0
He’s won four on the trot and looks to have plenty of upside. He’ll be competitive in some tough races this spring and Lindsay Park have him nominated for the Golden Eagle.
Target races: Golden Eagle
I’M THUNDERSTRUCK ($200,000)
Trainer: Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr. Career: 7:4-0-2
I’m Thunderstruck is headed towards the Golden Eagle and is currently the second favourite. He went enormous in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes first-up and has won four of his seven starts. He’s got a stack of upside.
Target races: Toorak Hanidcap, Golden Eagle
INCENTIVISE ($200,000)
Trainer: Peter Moody. Career: 9:6-0-0
Does this pick need much explanation? He’s favourite for both the Melbourne and Caulfield Cup off the back of a Makybe Diva Stakes win, yet he’ll only take up a small portion of your salary cap. Should be appearing in every stable at one point this season.
Target races: Caulfield Cup, Melbourne Cup
ELEPHANT ($200,000)
Trainer: Emma-Lee & David Browne. Career: 7:6-1-0
The Kiwi will only keep improving with racing. He stepped up from a Benchmark 84 to a weight-for-age Group 2 at just his sixth start to only lose in a photo finish. Won the Group 3 Sandown Stakes last start and connections will surely have a firm eye on the Cox Plate.
Target race: Toorak Handicap, Cox Plate
DUAIS ($200,000)
Trainer: Ed Cummings. Career: 11:4-4-1
The Queensland Oaks winner showed she’s back in good order with a third in the Group 3 Cameron Handicap. Expect her to be competitive in races like the Cox Plate and possibly Caulfield Cup.
Target races: Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup
