SOME ambitious TAB punters have bet against Winx to despite TAB’s Nick Quinn declaring: “It is almost impossible to see Winx failing to win the Cox Plate.”

Despite 93.3% of the money being on the mighty mare since the market opened on October 22 last year, there have been several small wagers on other horses in the race.

“It is almost impossible to see Winx failing to win the Cox Plate for a third straight year, but in the past fortnight we have seen blowout results in the Caulfield Guineas with Mighty Boss and in the Caulfield Cup with Boom Time and there are a small number of punters anticipating that it will happen again in the Cox Plate,” TAB’s Nick Quinn said.

The biggest wager not on Winx is $500 on Royal Symphony at $26, for a potential collect at $13,000.

That bet pales into insignificance when compared with the largest wagers on the 2015 and 2016 winner, with $106,500, $60,000, and two $50,000 bets placed on the champion this week.

In the favourite out market, Royal Symphony heads a crowded market at $4, ahead of Humidor at $4.40 and Gailo Chop and Folkswood at $4.60.

Almost 60,000 bets have been placed on champion mare, but only nine punters jumped in at her most lucrative price in the minutes after she romped to victory in last year’s race.

Shortly after crossing the line to win her second Cox Plate, the TAB installed Chris Waller’s super mare as the $4 favourite to return and win the 2017 Cox Plate, her third in succession.

Nine punters were quick to snap up the odds, including one bet of $2000.

It was a long range gamble that is set to pay a handsome dividends on Saturday.

“It would have seemed like a long time to wait for those customers but they are certainly laughing now,” TAB’s Nick Quinn said.

Winx is a raging hot favourite to win her third straight Cox Plate on Saturday.

Winx is set to start the shortest Cox Plate favourite since Phar Lap ($1.07) in 1931.

Winx is $1.15 to win her third Cox Plate and extend her winning run to 22.

After the barrier draw on Tuesday, one punter had $106,500 on Winx, the biggest ever bet taken by TAB on the mare, and the money has continued to pour in with bets of $60,000 and $43,478.

Overall, there have been 58,788 bets placed on Winx to win this year’s Cox Plate with 96 per cent of those as multi bets. “Punters have been using Winx to win the Cox Plate as an anchor in their multis for the past 12 months,” Quinn said.
