Profondo switch to Melbourne for Group 1 Australian Guineas no issue for exciting colt, trainer Richard Litt says

Sydney trainer Richard Litt says switching Profondo’s campaign to Melbourne was a tough decision but won’t be a problem for the excitement machine.

Sydney trainer Richard Litt says the unfortunate switch to Melbourne works out “very well” for Profondo ahead of Saturday’s Group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington.

The star colt was set to clash with Anamoe in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas on Saturday but heavy rainfall in recent days – and predictions of more to come – triggered the late swap.

Profondo will leave Warwick Farm on Thursday night and arrive at Flemington on Friday morning.

“It was a tough decision because, unfortunately, we’d much prefer to stay at home,” Litt said.

“The weather is not giving in and we need to do the right thing by the horse, we need to get the best track and that’s where we’re going.”

It sets up a bumper Australian Guineas with unbeaten Pinstriped and Group 1 Victoria Derby winner Hitotsu flying the Victorian flag.

His task has been harder by drawing barrier 15.

Group 1 Spring Champion winner Profondo has trialled twice in Sydney.

Bar the unexpected trip to Melbourne, Litt said Profondo’s preparation has not been impacted at all.

“That’s why we’re going,” Litt said.

“It’s fitted in very well and hasn’t altered his training, albeit a float trip, we know he travels well, we know he’s a happy horse, so it’s actually worked out very good in our favour to be honest.

“We’re lucky and then obviously we come home and it’s a fortnight into the Rosehill Guineas, so it’s all worked out very well to be honest.”

While comfortable Profondo will handle the trip and racing the Melbourne way, Litt would not be drawn on how the extremely valuable Deep Impact colt will perform on Saturday.

“Your guess is as good as mine,” Litt said.

“He’s very good, he’s first-up, who knows, who knows?

“We’ll know Saturday, but the mile is no trouble for him.”
