But British trainer Charlie Fellowes hit back, tweeting the horse was ‘loved more than any household pet’ and gave her a personal invitation to check on the welfare of the seven-year-old bay gelding.

“Your lack of knowledge on horse racing is embarrassing,’ Fellowes tweeted.

‘Come to Werribee tomorrow and I will personally introduce you to Prince of Arran.

‘You will quickly realise that he is not abused, in pain, or suffering.

‘Like every horse in my stable he is loved more than any household pet.’

A small group of protesters gathered outside Flemington yesterday with some pushing for a one per cent levy on betting turnover to build a retirement fund for racehorses.

Born and bred Aussie Vow And Declare stormed home in one of the closest Cup finishes in years, saluting for Danny O’Brien and giving gun jockey Craig Williams his first win in the big race.

Master Of Reality was second past the post but, on protest, was ruled to have interfered with Il Paradiso in the run home and, as a result, Prince Of Arran was promoted from third to second. Master Of Reality was demoted to fourth, with Il Paradiso third.
