There’s no better way to kick off the new year in style than with a win on the punt.
Racing expert Leo Schlink has the last word on the first metropolitan meeting of 2020.
BEST BET
HALVORSEN (Race 4, No.4) – Has earned black-type favouritism with successive victories here over 1100m, running the fastest last 600m of the meeting last time. The one to beat.
NEXT BEST
DOGMATIC (Race 5, No.1) – RV stewards reported the horse was “held up from the 500m to the 200m” before charging late when second behind talented Living The Dream.
MR MONACO (Race 8, No.11) – Powerful late when winning at Caulfield over 1440m. Has won up to 1800m so 1600m won’t be an issue. Damien Oliver retains the mount.
VALUE BET
METRONOME (Race 6, No.3) – Inconvenienced at the start and then had difficulty obtaining a run from the 500m to the 300m at Sandown. Can figure here with luck.
THE TRAINER – Tony McEvoy (Flemington)
WHO RUNS THE WORLD (Race 1, No.12) – “Talented filly who made a lot of mistakes at Bendigo. She missed the start and then had to go around the field to hit the front and her condition gave out late. If she gets it right, she will go well.”
CENSORED (Race 5, No.10) – “His two runs back have been excellent and he won well at Bendigo. Very pleased with him.”
SECRET BLAZE (Race 7, No.3) – “He’s in really great form. He’s the deserved favourite for the race.”
CLASSIC WEIWEI (Race 8, No.5) – “He’s a stakes winner, this fellow. He’s had a long time and whatever he does, he’ll be much better for the run.”
THE JOCKEY – Dwayne Dunn
In excellent form recently, Dunn will look to continue the run with AMATEURISH (Race 1, No.3), ZOUMANOR (Race 2, No.8), FIRSTHAND (Race 3, No.2), BOLD STAR (Race 4, No.7), GOLDIFOX (Race 6, No.14) and HIGH BRIDGE (Race 7, No.6).
