The Herald Sun’s form analyst Michael Manley gives her verdict on the performance of each runner in the $3 million weight-for-age championship.
1. WINX
Hugh Bowman: “When I was able to secure Hartnell’s hindquarters, all my worries disappeared and I just enjoyed the ride like everyone else. I knew Hartnell would take me where I needed to go to, and he couldn’t take me far enough. Even James (McDonald) said as I went by him, “Oh, Jesus Christ!”. She’s a superior racehorse and it’s just an absolute honour to be a part of it.”
MICHAEL MANLEY SAYS: What can you say. She’s a freak and will go down in history as one of the greats.
2. HARTNELL
James McDonald: “Wow! I don’t know what to say, I was going all right, too. It’s definitely not his track. He was brave in defeat but geez, she (Winx) is unreal.”
MICHAEL MANLEY SAYS: An excellent run but simply no match for Winx, as has been the case before. He fought hard to finish second. Rates well for Melbourne Cup.
3. YANKEE ROSE
Dean Yendall: “She went awesome. She was real solid to the line, I was rapt the way she went today.”
MICHAEL MANLEY SAYS: Settled midfield and ran home strongly to just miss second in great effort and a superb Oaks Trial.
4. VADAMOS
Mark Zahra: “He ran well, he was just too keen. I couldn’t get him to switch off and I thought he did a good job to run fourth considering.”
MICHAEL MANLEY SAYS: Great effort to hang on and finish fourth after taking up a big lead mid-race.
5. AWESOME ROCK
Stephen Baster: “He ran super. Obviously I got on Winx’s back from about the 700 (metres) but she was too good for us.”
MICHAEL MANLEY SAYS: Good run on an unsuitable wet track. Settled just behind the speed and looked to be travelling nicely with 600m to go but couldn’t sprint in the going. Battled on strongly.
6. HAPPY CLAPPER
Brenton Avdulla: “I thought he ran well. He didn’t disgrace himself but that’s probably as wet as he wants it. She (Winx) is just a freak.”
MICHAEL MANLEY SAYS: Always out the back and never a threat in unsuitable going. Tried to come into the race before the turn but was soon struggling.
7. LUCIA VALENTINA
Kerrin McEvoy: “She never really travelled and the race was getting away from me from the half-mile. That’s unlike her. She’s better than that.”
MICHAEL MANLEY SAYS: Settled as expected in the back half of the field. The first horse under hard riding from the 700m mark. On a wet track, which should have suited, she was disappointing.
8. HAURAKI
Dwayne Dunn: “I had a good run in transit, he was probably just found wanting late. He’s probably better on top of the ground.”
MANLEY MANLEY SAYS: Always out the back as expected. Started a run at the 600m and looked a place chance but just struggled home.
9. BLACK HEART BART
Brad Rawiller: “When Vadamos went through, he switched off and I thought I was having a beautiful run but just under pressure on the wet ground, he struggled.”
MICHAEL MANLEY SAYS: Worked forward early to take the lead, settling in second behind Vadamos. Took the lead momentarily at the 600m mark and then tried to go with Hartnell and Winx but soon dropped off.
10. HAPPY TRAILS
Ben Melham: “Didn’t go in the ground.”
MICHAEL MANLEY SAYS: Not a great display to celebrate his fifth Cox Plate. Last throughout as he struggled on the wet ground.
HOW THE RACE WAS WON
Michael Manley
START
Vadamos is slow to begin. Yankee Rose jumps well. Hartnell, Black Heart Bart, Awesome Rock are also in the leading group. Winx jumps sweetly with Hugh Bowman happy to ease her out of the early battle.
FIRST TIME PAST WINNING POST
Black Heart Bart is forced to lead from Hartnell with Awesome Rock, Vadamos and Yankee Rose. Winx settles comfortably in sixth placing.
1200M
Vadamos takes off to forge a solid lead from Black Heart Bart. Hartnell is next but wherever he goes he is stalked by Winx who is travelling well even this far from home.
HOME TURN
The race is on. Hartnell and Winx loom on the outside of Black Heart Bart. Winx is travelling better than the other pair. Vadamos is on the fence and trying to stay with them.
FINISH LINE
Winx careers away for the biggest winning margin in Cox Plate history. There’s another race going on for second and Hartnell narrowly holds off Yankee Rose.
