CAULFIELD

RACE 7: COCKRAM STAKES (Group 3, 1200m, 4.30pm)

A mouth-watering contest with two rising stars Sylvia’s Mother and Pippie heading the betting and both have firmed in the early markets.

Pippie has come back in tremendous order this preparation winning both starts.

She resumed by bolting in at Doomben when a heavily backed favourite and then defied a late betting drift to thrash a good field at Caulfield last start.

She opened $3.70 and has already firmed to $3. Although Pippie will be hard to beat, I would not recommend taking any shorter than her current $3 quote.

Sylvia’s Mother has always been a runner who has caught the eye of punters and we see her for the first time since an eye catching win at Flemington on July 19. She opened $3.50 and has trimmed up into $3.40.

I am a huge fan of the Robbie Griffiths-trained Fidelia. She resumes after a magnificent campaign that saw her win four start races to end her preparation.
She opened $8 and has eased to $11.

I anticipate that the distance and race conditions won’t suit this Saturday, however stick with her as she gets up in distance and have the black-book out ready to write down her name

SUGGESTED BET: Boxed quinella SYLVIA’S MOTHER (11) and PIPPIE (13)

CUP MEMORIES: PAYNE PRIMED FOR PREMIERE CLOSE-UP

DAVID HAYES: VEGA STILL HAS MAGIC FOR EVEREST

RACE 8: MEMSIE STAKES (Group 1, 1400m, 4.50pm)

The first Group 1 in Victoria for the season and it has attracted a terrific field.

James Cummings-trained mare Alizee currently heads the market, but has been relatively unwanted at this early stage.

Alizee has had a big autumn and resumed from a spell with an impressive, but narrow victory in the Group 2 Missile Stakes.

The wide draw will be to her advantage and in a race with plenty of speed and expect her to swoop into the race and be prominent in the finish.

Alizee won the Group 1 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield in the autumn and now heads the market but is soft at this early stage.

She was posted $2.80 and has eased to $3.30.

The money has come for Scales Of Justice, who was costly for punters biting the dust in Morphettville at $1.75 last start but won the Bletchingly Stakes first up.

Scales Of Justice opened $6.50 and has been backed into $5.

There has been some early money for the ultra consistent veteran Hartnell who has firmed from $7.50 into $7.

Begood Toya Mother rises sharply in grade and has eased from $6.50 to $9 while Despatch has trimmed up from $26 into $23.

SUGGESTED BET: ALIZEE the win

ROSEHILL

RACE 5: SAN DOMENICO STAKES (Group 5, 1100m, 2.30pm)

The San Domenico Stakes will go a long way towards shaping betting for the Golden Rose Stakes.

Bivouac has already been well backed to win. He defeated Libertini last campaign and that form now looks even stronger after her breathtaking victory last Saturday.

Bivouac resumed from a spell with a strong win in the Vain Stakes and deserves favouritism.

He was posted a $2.25 market leader on Monday when the betting was posted off the nominations and punters didn’t hesitate backing him into $2.

Bivouac reopened $1.80 once final field was declared and has already been backed into $1.65.

Early bets on Bivouac include $1181 and $2750 at $1.75.

As a result Yes Yes Yes has drifted from $3.60 out to $3.90.

Yes Yes Yes has been well backed to win the Group 1 Golden Rose including one bet of $6000 at $9.

Exceedance is the runner that seems over the odds at $4.80.

Biivouac is a terrific chance, but is under the odds compared to Yes Yes Yes and Exceedance.

SUGGESTED BET: YES YES YES and EXCEEDANCE the win
