James McDonald after his victory on Verry Elleegant
The official winning margin was four lengths.
Verry Elleegant, last year’s Caulfield Cup champ, gave champion trainer Chris Waller his first Melbourne Cup.
The six-year-old is the first mare to win the Cup since Makybe Diva in 2005 and also defied history by carrying the most weight (57kg) to win since Protectionist shouldered 56.5kg in 2014. Makybe Diva carried 58kg in her third Cup in 2005.

And that's a wrap on Melbourne Cup Day for another year!
The John O'Shea-trained Quantico has stamped himself as a real star of the future with a slashing victory in the Listed MSS Security Sprint (1200m).
Winner at five of his first nine starts at home in Sydney, the five-year-old son of I Am Invincible savaged the line to score comprehensively at his first experience up the straight.
The impressive win provided three-time Melbourne Cup winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy his first success of the Flemington carnival.
The win by Quantico will go some way to eroding the disappointment O'Shea encountered when race favourite Promise Of Success was a shock late scratching in the lead up to race eight.
Finishing second in the final event on Melbourne Cup day was Sirius Suspect while Prime Candidate finished third.
The win of Verry Elleegant was a fill-up for bookmakers across Australia who stood to lose tens of millions if hot favourite Incentivise won.
The TAB held $8 million on the race of which 24 per cent was bet on Incentivise.
Other corporate bookmakers around the country laid Incentivise for millions of dollars so they would have been thrilled to see $18 chance Verry Elleegant sail past Incentivise at the 300m mark.
Betting agency Sportsbet would be ruing their decision to payout on a Melbourne Cup win for Incentivise on October 20.
They paid out customers a total of $5.6 million but there's a fair chance they got that back and more today.

Trainer Mitchell Freedman and jockey Jordan Childs have combined to win the Listed TAB Trophy (1800m) with Spirit Of Gaylard.
Unlucky to miss a berth in last Saturday's Victoria Derby, Spirit Of Gaylard confirmed he's a horse with a real future, toughing it out for a slender Cup day success over the 1800 metre journey.
Sent out a $5.50 second favourite by punters, Spirit Of Gaylard defeated Blushing Tycoon by a narrow margin on the line with $4.60 favourite Maracana not far away in third.
FULL RESULT
1 – 6. SPIRIT OF GAYLARD 2 – 2. BLUSHING TYCOON 3 – 14. MARACANA 4th – 12. ALL SO CLEAR
Emotional win there at Flemington for Spirit Of Gaylard. Named in honour of the late Rob Gaylard, MC at Flemington for many years and a great friend to so many. Well done to make this happen to Terry Henderson & Gerry Ryan, partly owned by Rob’s wife Karen, lovely moment #CupDay
A masterful Nash Rawiller ride has returned talented mare Rich Hips to winning form in the Group 3 Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes (1400m).
Winning the race for the second straight year, Rich Hips drew gate 11 for the group 3 event but you wouldn't have known it watching the latter stages, Rawiller producing a rails hugging ride to secure victory on the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained five-year-old.
Second in the race was Excelida while Paul's Regret filled third. Race favourite April Rain was well beaten out of the placings.
