Melbourne Cup 2020: Kerrin McEvoy fined for whip rule breach on Tiger Moth

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy’s disappointment at just missing out on another Melbourne Cup win was compounded by stewards, who handed the hoop a huge fine for a rules breach.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy was suspended and fined a whopping $50,000 for overuse of the whip on Melbourne Cup runner-up Tiger Moth at Flemington.

Tiger Moth finished a long neck from Twilight Payment in the Melbourne Cup despite McEvoy’s serious breach of the whip rules.

McEvoy pleaded guilty to using the whip 13 times on the Aidan O’Brien-trained Tiger Moth before the 100m, eight more than allowed, and 21 times overall.

McEvoy earnt $55,000 in riding percentages for his second placing on Tiger Moth but stewards stripped him of all but $5000 of that amount for his offence.

Stewards suspended McEvoy for 13 meetings, starting from midnight on November 5.

McEvoy will miss the final day of the Flemington carnival.

Winning rider Jye McNeil earned $220,000 in riding percentages for his win on Twilight Payment.

CUP RIDES: THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY

Clinton Payne

WINNING RIDE

One of the best-judged rides in the history of the race. Jye McNeil’s take-no-prisoners attitude delivered the ultimate result when Twilight Payment rewarded his rider’s judgment and positive approach, leading throughout and finding plenty when needed. His early desire to lead and the pressure applied from the 1600m were keys to the victory.

THE BEST LOSING RIDE

Hard to find fault with Kerrin McEvoy’s ride on the runner-up Tiger Moth. From barrier 23 he had his mount in a forward position outside the leader and winner as the field left the straight. Tiger Moth trailed the speed but was unable to peg back the tenacious leader which stole a break in the middle stages.

THE NEXT BEST LOSING RIDE

Michael Dee went back early on Persan from barrier 20 and he didn’t go around a horse in the straight, pinching run after run along the inside and working home well into fifth place.

THE UNLUCKY RIDE

Prince Of Arran was again outstanding but with a shade more luck he might have won the Melbourne Cup. Held up and losing momentum behind plodding horses on the point of the turn and in the early part of the straight was costly – how costly? I’d say it cost the horse the race but we’ll never know.

THE RIDE THE JOCKEY WOULD LIKE OVER AGAIN

Hindsight would be a wonderful superpower for a jockey to possess and if Jamie Kah had her time over again I doubt she’d have handed up her spot to The Chosen One down the straight the first time. The Chosen One got out at the right time at the top of the straight while Prince Of Arran was being held up for some distance, probably costing the horse the race.

THE OTHER RIDE THE JOCKEY MAY LIKE OVER AGAIN

If Michael Dee had his time over again would he have made more use of his 51kg light weight and continued his forward roll in the early stages aboard Persan? He turned in a beauty as it was but maybe if he’d gone forward into a similar spot to Tiger Moth he may have finished even closer with the feather weight.
