MICHELLE Payne has ridden into histoy on the back of Prince of Penzance but what happened to the favourites?

Check out where your horse finished and what the jockeys said.

The Herald Sun’s Michael Manley also rates the performance of each runner and The Daily Telegraph’s Nic Ashman details how the race was won.

1. PRINCE OF PENZANCE ($101)

What the jockeys said: Michelle Payne: “Unbelievable. I was lying in bed last night and gave myself a chance to think and dream about it, and thought about it as if I was being interviewed after the race. It’s like a dream come true. He just burst to the front and his character won. It was just unbelievable.”

Michael Manley says: One of the great Melbourne Cup rides of all time. Everything went to plan. Michelle eased him into the race at the right time and from the 350m mark he was always going to win.

2. MAX DYNAMITE ($13)

Frankie Dettori: “It was a bit unfortunate that I couldn’t get the split when I wanted but that’s racing.”

Manley says: Top run and may well have won but Michelle Payne outrode Dettori just before straightening when she shifted away from the rails and went to Max Dynamite’s outside. Couldn’t get a clear run after that and only got one when Dettori reefed him to the middle of the track to launch his sprint knocking over other runners. Ran the fastest last 400m and 200m.

3. CRITERION ($19)

Michael Walker: “Great run. Probably should’ve been a different result. I had the best run where I wanted to be; clocked off well (in the run) and I got really confident with a mile to go. All I needed was an out and I thought I could win. I just had to wait for the last furlong and the others flashed by. I would’ve been in it had I got out at the top of the straight.”

Manley says: Brave and honest as always and deserves a change of luck. Had a great run on the fence but didn’t quite get the clear room needed in the early part of the straight only getting out when Prince Of Penzance had passed him. Might have been a different result if he got clear earlier.

4. TRIP TO PARIS ($6)

Tommy Berry: “The slow tempo mid-race didn’t suit him. I thought I was the winner at the top of the straight but he didn’t show the same turn-of-foot as he did in the Caulfield Cup.”

Manley says: Only beaten two lengths but was slightly disappointing as he in the right spot to win. Looked certain to go close as they straightened slikely winner half, especially if he got home like he did in the Caulfield Cup, but was a little flat in the last 50m.

5. BIG ORANGE ($61)

Jamie Spencer: “A good run. The draw made it difficult and I felt the track was a little bit dead for my horse.”

Manley says: Worked across from his outside barrier to take the lead early in the race. Held this spot until turning and although under pressure kept fighting on in brave effort.

6. GUST OF WIND ($41)

Chad Schofield: “She travelled well and hit the line very strongly.”

Manley says: Huge run. Not suited by the slowly run race. Was well back but was close to the fence and full of running before the turn. When Chad Schofield finally got her into the clear she sprouted wins running home in the second quickest last 400m.

7. EXCESS KNOWLEDGE ($31)

Kerrin McEvoy: “He ran great. We got across into a nice spot. He just levelled out the last part.”

Manley says: Brave effort. Worked forward from his outside draw to sit outside the leader. Hit the front with 300m to go and held that spot until the 180m when just started to tire.

8. THE OFFER ($31)

Damien Oliver: “He ran super. The ground was a bit firm for him. If it had been wet, he’d have been right in it.”

Manley says: Really good run. Looked threatening on the turn when making his run around the outside but then got caught in the no go slow lane. Despite this he surged away from the other horses out wide in the closing stages including Fame Game.

9. QUEST FOR MORE ($81)

Damian Lane: “Super run. A bit more room in the straight and he finishes closer.”

Manley says: Another who came across from his outside draw to settle third on the fence. Was bolting on the turn but just couldn’t get a run in the early part of the straight. He also wasn’t suited by the slow tempo.

10. OUR IVANHOWE ($21)

Ben Melham: “He got into a great spot and a run opened up for him on the fence. The run then closed and he wasn’t sharp enough in the finish.”

Manley says: Another who looked to be full of running in the straight but didn’t get any room and also suffered interference.

11. WHO SHOT THEBARMAN ($21)

Blake Shinn: “He ran well, the pace just didn’t suit him. They went slow and it was a sprint home.”

Manley says: Looked well placed and a real winning chance in the straight but couldn’t get past Trip To Paris and Excess Knowledge and then another who suffered interference so should have finished at least in the top 10.

12. SERTORIUS ($101)

Craig Newitt: “He ran as well as he could.”

Manley says: Settled well back and worked home in good style recording the fourth fastest last 400m. One of the few which had a clear run so had no excuses but tried hard.

13. FAME GAME ($5 fav)

Zac Purton: “The pace was just too slack for him.”

Manley says: Came to the outside in the straight but ended up in the quicksand. Still was disappointing though. Probably needed a faster speed.

14. THE UNITED STATES ($21)

Joao Moreira: “He did finish off a little bit but being on the outside and on the softer ground, he just couldn't keep going.”

Manley says: Another who tried to sprint home out wide in the slow zone. Effort was fair.

15. HARTNELL ($31)

James McDonald: “He went OK. Did everything right.”

Manley says: Settled well back and came wide with the clump which didn’t make any ground in the straight.

16. BONDI BEACH ($21)

Brett Prebble: “Lovely horse. His style of racing left him flat-footed in the finish and it was just all too much for him too quickly.”

Manley says: Made an early run out wide but struggled home in the slower going.

17. HOKKO BRAVE ($41)

Craig Williams: “We got a severe bump in the straight and it really took the wind out of him.”

Manley says: Looked to have something to offer early in the straight but race was all over for him when Gust Of Wind flattened him.

18. ALMOONQITH ($17)

Dwayne Dunn: “Just a terrible race for me. I got smashed up early and never got into a rhythm.

Manley says: Looked to be travelling well on the turn but struck interference. Then was a bit flat after that.

19. KINGFISHER ($61)

Colm O’Donoghue: “Happy enough.”

Manley says: Found plenty of trouble at the 300m mark and was also out wide.

20. PREFERMENT ($9)

Hugh Bowman: “I got flattened at the 300 (metre mark).”

Manley says: Bowman was riding him along and he looked ready to go when he was knocked down.

21. GRAND MARSHAL ($61)

Jim Cassidy: “I had the winner inside of me the whole way but she went up the inside and I peeled out one and I went half a furlong and got taken out of the race.”

Manley says: Travelled beautifully throughout the race. Jim Cassidy looked poised to go on him when he knocked down. Might have run a big race otherwise.

22. SKY HUNTER ($31)

William Buick: “Bottom line is that he probably doesn’t get the trip.”

Manley says: Made a charge on the turn but was beaten soon afterwards and battled home.

23. SNOW SKY ($51)

Ryan Moore: “I was running a nice race. I wasn’t going to win but I just got chopped off.”

Manley says: Looked a winning chance on straightening but soon after was under hard riding. Then was knocked down and put out of the race.

Failed to finish. RED CADEAUX ($26)

Gerald Mosse: “I have nothing to say.”

Manley says: Sad end to the career of this gallant galloper. Never a winning chance but the good news is he will survive.

Margin: 1/2 len, 3/4 len. Time: 3:23.15. (Last 600m 34.40).

HOW THE CUP WAS WON

Nic Ashman

AT THE START: Prince Of Penzance jumped sluggishly but was able to hold a midfield spot on the rail from his inside gate. Coming down the straight for the first time, he was inclined to overrace with the slow speed set up front by Big Orange. Preferment got shuffled right back to the tail while Fame Game was slightly worse than midfield. Tommy Berry was positive on Trip To Paris and they settled one off the fence nice and handy and around three lengths ahead of Prince Of Penzance.

DOWN THE BACK: Michelle Payne was giving Prince Of Penzance the perfect run on the fence. There was a bit of argy bargy going on but the winner was travelling sweetly on the inside doing little work as race favourite Fame Game was trapped wide and on occasion, without cover.

THE 1400m MARK: This is where the pace looked to quicken and the horses at the back of the field like Fame Game and Preferment were immediately in trouble as they had to start chasing horses that had a full tank of fuel and were lengths ahead of them.

THE HOME TURN: Michelle Payne cleverly navigated a path away from the fence to the outside of runners but still managed to get much needed cover on the back of Tommy Berry and Trip To Paris, who were three wide and about to challenge for the lead. Fame Game came widest on the corner and was forced to make his run on the quicksand — the worst part of the track while Preferment was no hope at the tail of the field.

THE WINNING MOVE: Payne hooked off the back of Trip To Paris and pressed the button at the 250m mark and Prince Of Penzance sprinted quickly putting the race beyond doubt. Criterion in the yellow silks finally got clear and made his dash but the winner was too good.

ON THE LINE: It was all Prince Of Penzance after being given the perfect ride by Payne. Max Dynamite got home well for second while Criterion got up for third. Big Orange, the original leader in the race, kept kicking quite well and finished fifth just behind Trip To Paris.
