OWNER Lloyd Williams has won his first Caulfield Cup after Fawkner defeated Dandino and Dear Demi in this afternoon's Group 1.
The 2013 Caulfield Cup proved to be a triumph for the Macedon Lodge racing operation run by Williams.
Williams had six horses in the Caulfield Cup last week but took out five leaving Fawkner as their only runner.
Nick Williams said the win had been 11 months in the planning.
He said eleven months ago they had an offer to sell Fawkner but it wasn’t followed through.
“Dad decided he would win the Caulfield Cup and he was right,” Williams said.
Fawkner was ridden by Nick Hall. He defeated Dandino and Dear Demi.
Favourite Hawkspur was never a chance, failing to get the right run in transit. It leaves veteran Jim Cassidy still waiting to join legends George Moore and Roy Higgins as the only jockeys to win 100 Group 1 races.
Williams' spring team of Fawkner, reigning Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon, Sea Moon, Seville, Tanby and Mourayan look to play a big part in the next couple of weeks as attention turns to next week's Cox Plate at Moonee Valley and the race that stops a nation on November 5.
