GROUP 1-winning jockey and now media personality Katelyn Mallyon has thrown her support behind Jaameh to win through to the Melbourne Cup via the ‘last-chance saloon’ and take out the Group 3 Lexus Stakes on Derby Day.
Joining the Sneaky Chance podcast crew for the second year, Mallyon was upbeat the Lindsay Park stayer can earn his passage to our most famous race next Tuesday.
“Jaameh for me. I think he’s a real Flemington horse, too,” Mallyon said. “Especially from the barrier (two). The only problem he is going to find himself is trying to get out.”
Looking further afield, Mallyon was keen on Zousain in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes — to be ridden by her partner James McDonald — pointing to the colt’s sterling performance against The Autumn Sun in the Group 1 Golden Rose when narrowly beaten.
For the Victoria Derby, Mallyon couldn’t go pass Gai Waterhouse-trained topweight Thinkin’ Big, admitting she had been on board for some time.
“ When I first saw him on his debut at Canterbury I nearly fell over looking at him. He’s such an impressive looking animal,” she said.
Tune in for the rest of Mallyon’s tips and those of the regular panel — Herald Sun’s Glenn McFarlane and Gilbert Gardiner along with Superracing’s Chris Vernuccio — as they dissect the all-important quaddie legs on arguably the biggest raceday of the year.
THE BIG FOUR
Race 5 2.25pm COOLMORE STUD STAKES (1200m, 3yo)
One of the feature three-year-old races of the season and it’s known as the stallion making race. A lot is at stake as nine of the 10 runners are colts and for the victor’s value will skyrocket as a stallion prospect. WRITTEN BY (1) has lost one of his seven starts and if anything seems to be flying below the radar. His trainer Grahame Begg has focused his whole preparation on this race for eight months. ZOUSAIN (2) was beaten in a photo by his star stablemate The Autumn Sun in the Golden Rose at Randwick. Stable LEAN MEAN MACHINE (4) is also smart. Star filly SUNLIGHT (10) has little luck in the Manikato Stakes. David Hayes pinpointed this race for LONG LEAF (5) six weeks ago.

Race 6 3.05pm EMPIRE ROSE STAKES (1600m, f&m)
No better race for the fillies and mares. Until two years ago fillies weren’t meant to win but Dean Yendall has changed that around winning the past two on fillies and he’s on another one in the Thousand Guineas winner AMPHRITITE (15) this year. The placegetters from that race FUNDAMENTALIST (16) and SEABROOK (14) also will contest this race as will Caulfield Guineas placegetter OOHOOD (13). They take on classy in-form mares I AM A STAR (1), SHILLELAGH (3) and ALOISIA (5).

Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s THINKIN’ BIG (1) is a warm favourite and is expected to win and then could back up in the Melbourne Cup, three days later becoming the first three-year-old to contest the race since Arena in 1998. Gai believes he’ll run the 2500m out without a problem but if he doesn’t it’s an open race. Robbie Laing’s son of Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente STARS OF CARRUM (4) flew home to win the Moonee Valley Vase last Saturday. In the same race ARAMAYO (2) and SAVVY OAK (14) also finished on for third and fourth in that race.

Race 8 4.35pm KENNEDY MILE
Melbourne’s feature mile race and our local master trainer Darren Weir has a powerful representation and he should be to the fore. LAND OF PLENTY (4) recorded a fast time when he won the Toorak Handicap comfortably. He’ll sit mid-field and produce his powerful sprint again. Stablemate PEACEFUL STATE (16) is a gifted galloper who finished second in the Australian Guineas earlier this year over this track and distance. CLIFF’S EDGE (11) and ICONOCLASM (18) both were impressive last start winners at The Valley. HARTNELL (1) is mr dependable at this level.
