Scorched Earth resumes at Flemington on Saturday in what will double as a trial for the $2m Magic Millions Guineas (1400m).

Former Caulfield stalwart-turned-delighted Cranbourne trainer John Moloney will rely on champion jockey Damien Oliver to frank his own opinion of the explosive filly.

The exciting multiple stakes-winning daughter of Nicconi has enough prizemoney to qualify for the auction-house restricted $2m Guineas on January 15 at Gold Coast.

Suitably fast conditions at Flemington on Saturday, coupled with a nice weight and good barrier has Moloney upbeat about the bellwether filly bought for $90,000 in 2020.

“Anything that’s been around her, she’s beaten or been beaten by, has been pretty handy form,” Moloney said of the speedy $285,000-earner.

“It’s hard to measure her, for us she’s exciting and what she measures up to I’m not sure, Saturday gives us a little lead.

“She will be nominated for the Magic Millions, obviously the 1400m (Guineas) and the 1300m fillies and mares ($1m race), I’ll be guided by what she does Saturday.

“Damien is a pretty good judge of horseflesh, so he’ll be able to give us an indication on whether we try (Gold Coast) or stay in Melbourne and wait our turn for nice races as they come.”

Scorched Earth and Galenus share the third line of betting on Saturday with TAB as $6.50 chances for the 1000m sprint, behind Yulong Command ($4.20) and Winsum ($4.80).

The filly is $34 in TAB’s all-in MM Guineas market.

Moloney won an auction house-restricted race in Adelaide with Scorched Earth last season – proof the filly travels well.

“She coped well with that (Adelaide) and even getting to Cranbourne she did as good as any,” Moloney said.

“She walked into Cranbourne like she owned it, she obviously can travel and change environment without a worry.

“Hopefully she can continue to be better and better … so far it’s been a good ride.”
