Jamie Kah needs five winners from seven rides at Caulfield to bring up 100 city winners

Jamie Kah has already bagged five winners in a meeting, and another at Caulfield on Saturday will bring up a historic achievement.

Jamie Kah on Saturday at Caulfield will resume her quest towards a record 100 city winners.

Melbourne Racing Club is on standby to celebrate the century with an engraved champagne bucket to be presented to Kah upon the milestone, should it occur at Caulfield or Sandown on Wednesday.

Kah has seven rides at The Heath — the scene of her record five-timer last month — hoping to build on her 95 winners already banked.

Champion jockey Brett Prebble rode 99.5 winners officially in the 1999-2000 season, with a dead-heat contributing to the record tally.

No jockey in Victorian racing history has officially posted 100 metropolitan wins in a single season.

With 10 city meetings still up her sleeve and barring the unforeseen, Kah has Prebble’s mark covered.

Kah had eight rides at Caulfield — all for different trainers, including one for husband-to-be Clayton Douglas — prior to the scratching of Excelman on Friday.

Her remaining rides include Darceandermill (race 1), Musk Lollie (race 2), Dickin Medal (race 3), Kinane (race 8) and Pintoff (race 9).

Kah, who relocated from her South Australia in 2019, also leads the way with 124 minor placings in town — Damien Oliver next best on 113.

Her dominance has seen the 25-year-old earn more than $11 million prizemoney for connections.

Jockeys are entitled to five per cent of all prizemoney earned.

Kah’s stellar season has included two Group 1s in Melbourne — Mr Quickie (Toorak Handicap) and Nature Strip (Newmarket Handicap).

Kah also won the Doncaster (Cascadian) in Sydney and the Stradbroke (Vega One) in Brisbane, taking her tally to six top-flight wins overall, to surpass Michelle Payne (five) as Australia’s most successful female Group 1 jockey.

John Allen leads the overall Victorian Jockeys‘ Premiership (includes provincial winners) on 131 wins – a four-win buffer on Kah.

Kent tempers expectations on pair

Trainer Mick Kent has tempered expectations on stablemates Falls and Kinane at Caulfield on Saturday, wary of track conditions.

Falls romped to a comprehensive victory at Sandown Hillside last start. Kinane, who returned to Kent after an unsuccessful stint with Chris Waller, was scratched a fortnight ago with slight mucus.

Falls is the $4.80 TAB third favourite in race 4 – a Benchmark 78 over 1600m – behind Thought Of That ($3.40) and Over The Sky ($3.50).

“It’s much harder, this one,” Kent said.

“It all depends on the track and how it’s going to play. With the rail out 12 metres, it’s a bit dicey. It will all depend what the track is doing, that will dictate my chances.”

The rail movement – to give the inner part of the track the chance to recover from recent racing – has restricted field sizes to 14 starters.

The passionate advocate for Sandown said the venue should have been used instead of Caulfield on Saturday – citing the rail movement — to avoid balloting-out runners, despite one silver lining.

Kent credited the capped field to landing Jamie Kah aboard Kinane in race 8.

“Just fluked her, really – she had a ride, but it didn’t get a run,” Kent said.

“Should’ve gone to Sandown, acres of grass.”
