It’s almost sudden-death for Victoria’s best Auckland Inter Dominion hope San Carlo in the second round of heats on Tuesday night.
The star Shepparton veteran opened the series with a fighting fifth after doing all the work in his opening round heat on Friday night.
San Carlo drew the pole when fields were released on Saturday and should have enough early speed to lead over the 1700m sprint trip on Tuesday night.

“He’s come through last night well and he will certainly be better for that experience of his first race going the opposite direction,” co-trainer and driver Bec Bartley said. “Tuesday’s draw is such a big help.”
Ironically, his main danger looks to be another Australian, Victoria Cup winner Bling It On, who drew to follow San Carlo from inside the back row (gate nine), but will need to rebound from an opening flop.
“He overraced and stopped so quickly I think he might have cut his wind off a bit,” co-trainer and driver Luke McCarthy said. “It’s just not him. I’ve turned the page because he seems so well this morning and this trailing draw is perfect on Tuesday.”
In the trotting series, a decision will be made after a workout on Monday whether top Victorian trotter McLovin “rejoins” the series after missing opening night with a minor health setback.
