A boozy lunch turned 14-hour tequila-charged bender was the catalyst for naming Yes Yes Yes — joint $6 third favourite for the $2 million Magic Millions Two Year-Old Classic.

The group of prominent Melbourne finance and property high-flyers behind Darren Weir’s sprinter christened 10 horses during the marathon ”naming ceremony”, but part-owner Aziz Kheir said connections settled on Yes Yes Yes instantly and almost in unison.
“I think there’d been three or four tequilas down … and one of the guys said it’s out of Sin Sin Sin and about five people yelled at the same time Yes Yes Yes, so we said OK that’s the name,” Kheir said.
The party started at Kisume, a Japanese restaurant in Flinders Lane, at noon and finished at Baroq House at 4am, the last ones standing helping staff mop the dancefloor and clear glasses.
“It was a naming ceremony for all the horses and it just continued and continued on, it went from lunch to dinner to late night drinks,” Kheir said.
“We went to dinner straight from lunch because they needed the room so we went to dinner somewhere else and then out for drinks and ended up on the dance floor.”
Yes Yes Yes — a $200,000 purchase at the 2018 Magic Millions Yearling Sale — has gone some way towards repaying the faith, having pocketed $128,000 in three starts, including back-to-back wins at Flemington and Moonee Valley.
For Kheir, who has shares in 2014 Melbourne Cup-winner Protectionist and last year’s runner-up Marmelo, Yes Yes Yes is his first real look at yearlings after success with imported horses.
The two-year-old is the first of six yearlings purchased by the syndicate, which Humidor and Kings Will Dream part-owner Brae Sokolski started last year, to get to the racetrack.
“This is really the first batch … if we have success I think it’s going to give me another bug, unfortunately, not only will I have imported horses I’ll be looking for yearlings,” Kheir said.
“About six weeks ago we didn’t think we’d have a two-year-old running so to now have one of the favourites in the Magic Millions will be fantastic.
“He’ll run really well, if he draws a good gate and the tempo is on, I think he’s going to be a big chance. I’m hoping he can run top three but it would be nice to have a win.”
The barrier draw will be held on Tuesday in Gold Coast.
