Home for running of Cox Plate in 2025 yet to be confirmed as Valley undergoes redevelopment

Just where the Cox Plate will be staged is still to be confirmed as the racecourse redevelopment at The Valley in 2025 forces Australasia’s premier weight-for-age race off track.

The Cox Plate is yet to find a temporary home for 2025.

Moonee Valley Racing Club’s $2 billion redevelopment means either Flemington or Caulfield will host the Cox Plate in six years’ time.

Club chief executive Michael Browell confirmed a venue for Australasia’s weight-for-age championship in 2025 remained unresolved.

“We’re still working through whether it goes to Flemington or Caulfield,” Browell said.

“They are the two options.

“We just need to consider doing it after the Caulfield Cup carnival or doing it before the four days of the Melbourne Cup carnival.

“We haven’t sat down yet and considered that with the MRC (Melbourne Racing Club) or the VRC (Victoria Racing Club).

“In due course, we’ll have those conversations.”

Browell said the MVRC would continue to assess the merits of staging the Cox Plate at night but not before the club’s rebuild was complete.

“The club will consider changing the Cox Plate to a night meeting after we complete the redevelopment,” he said.

“So the first Cox Plate back after the track and the grandstand are rebuilt, we’re planning for that to be the 2026 Cox Plate.

“We’ll run the 2024 Cox Plate here, transfer the 2025 during the construction period. We’ll make sure the infrastructure is in place so we can look at staging the Cox Plate meeting at night.”

Nominations for this spring’s Cox Plate close on Tuesday. Tasmanian mare Mystic Journey is $4.50 favourite with TAB.
