Dermot Weld hasn’t had a Melbourne Cup runner in eight years but has flagged his ambition to win the famous race for the third time.
Emboldened by his recent drought-breaking success with a maiden triumph at the Breeders’ Cup thanks to Turf heroine Tarnawa, Weld feels he has some unfinished business in Australia.
Weld was a Melbourne Cup trailblazer with Vintage Crop becoming the first northern hemisphere-trained winner in 1993 and he doubled up with Media Puzzle’s memorable triumph in 2002.
But Weld hasn’t been seen at the Cup since Galileo’s Choice finished 20th in 2012 and before that he was here with Profound Beauty, who finished 17th in 2010.
However that could all be about to change for the 72-year-old Irish training legend.
“I have no doubt we will look forward to having another runner in the Melbourne Cup, most definitely,” Weld told Racenet from Ireland.
“Maybe I will even look at the Cox Plate too, who knows.
“But the Melbourne Cup is a great race and I would like to win it again.”
In the meantime, and before potentially plotting a long-range Melbourne Cup mission, Weld is content to savour a breakthrough victory at the Breeders’ Cup which had proved frustratingly elusive at 16 previous attempts.
