HALL of Fame jockey Damien Oliver gave another unforgettable demonstration of his riding genius to guide Black Tycoon to an improbable win in the Group 2 $500,000 Perth Cup (2400m) at Ascot yesterday.

Oliver and favourite Black Tycoon were buried well back in the ruck and seemingly out of race contention coming into the straight.

But 41-year-old Oliver, the hometown hero, weaved a path through the field, emerging inside the final 100m to score a popular win from God Has Spoken.

It was Oliver's second Perth Cup win after his previous success on Cat's Fun in 2008 and comes after his Melbourne Cup triumph on Fiorente last November - continuing his sensational return to the saddle in September after serving a 10-month ban for betting.

Black Tycoon ($4.80) came into the race on the back of satisfactory performances in the Kingston Town Classic (1800m) and the C.B Cox Stakes (2100m), but it was the step up to 2400m and a spectacular ride by Oliver that proved decisive.
