Craig Williams lauded Chris Waller’s training genius after September Run crowned her emergence as a sprint superstar by eclipsing the colts in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).
Waller sent the Exceed And Excel filly to Melbourne after a listless first-up fifth at Randwick in August, a decision which has continued to pay rich dividends as the three-year-old reeled off three successive victories.
All of those triumphs have been up Flemington’s straight with the latest making the Victorian-bred speedster the 12th female winner of the Coolmore and the first since Sunline two years ago.
Waller is an ardent believer in systems, but he is not afraid to experiment.
“You just got to keep trying things,” Waller said after notching is 118th Group 1.
“She was a step below the Sydney fillies with the first-up run, so I thought ‘How are we going to get her on the board?’
“We sent her down to Melbourne and she’s created her own legacy. She is a very good straight horse.”

The $4 favourite, September Run beat fellow filly Swats That ($7.50) by almost two lengths with Wild Ruler ($5).
“That was a good field there today of colts,” Waller said after Craig Williams timed September Run’s closing sprint to perfection.
“Today didn’t surprise me because I thought her last-start win was very good because she actually won with a bit of purpose.
“She hasn’t fallen in, she deadset attacked the line.
“So when you’re attacking the line up the straight, it’s a good sign for a race like this.”
Williams said Waller had filled him with confidence heading into Melbourne’s premier three-year-old sprint.
“Credit to Chris Waller,” he said. “I jumped her out 10 days ago and you could just see how much physically she had grown and improved, confidence, patience.
“Wow, she’s just one the best three-year-old sprint through the spring. She did all the running.
“I spoke to Chris this morning, he’s great to ride for. He said ‘You know her really well, so whatever it takes Craig’, you’ve got full support of the owners.’
“I knew if we get the first-half right we know what acceleration she’s got and we really saw that today.”
