Caulfield Cup 2017: $41 outsider Boom Time wins Caulfield Cup

BOOM Time has stormed home to win the Caulfield Cup in a major upset, with the $41 winner past the post first ahead of Single Gaze and favourite Johannes Vermeer.

The dominant Hayes/Dabernig stable claimed the $3.15 million race with Boom Time, which stormed home to defeat Single Gaze from the fast-finishing favourite Johannes Vermeer. Cory Parish piloted the $41 hope home in a thrilling finish. Nick Olive’s Single Gaze led the race for much of the journey, along with Sir Isaac Newton, which Katelyn Mallyon took to the front and built a big lead mid-race before the field closed. It was Parish’s first Group 1 victory. As recently as 2013, Parish — now 28 — had struggled to make ends meet. Now he’s a Caulfield Cup-winning jockey. There was even better news for David Hayes with him being the only listed owner of the horse. David’s son Ben described the win as “super exciting” and said that all he remembered was the horse getting out to find his run. “We thought it was a good place chance,” he said. “It was just amazing, the run. I remember him getting out and I was celebrating so hard.” David Hayes bought the horse from Karratha man Kim Loxton, who he said fell on hard times and had to sell up. “Unfortunately he had to sell out of everything and he was shut down,” he said. “But he rings in from time to time — I’ll be checking in with him tonight, for sure.
