Apprentice Matthew Cartwright sealed his first city treble with a patient steer on High ‘N’ Dry to take out the seventh race at Moonee Valley on Saturday.
Despite a prolific leader bias Cartwright bided time patiently as Galactic Fury and Fundraiser matched engines on the speed.
Cartwright popped out from behind eventual runner-up Unanimous rounding the bend and quickly put paid to the tiring leaders.
Fundraiser, a well-supported favourite, gripped on well for third considering the hot early speed.
“I was more looking for a pathway through than pressing the button,“ composed 19-year-old Cartwright said.
“I knew I had the horse underneath me, I just had to pick my way through and I got onto the back of Jamie (Kah, Unanimous) at the right time and then he sprinted over the top of her.
“The key to this horse is fast tempos and we got that today, he travelled right into it.”
Cartwright banked wins on Swelter Magic and Yulong Command early on the card.
Cartwright, who got a great rush riding Yulong Command, will be keen to stick with the Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained sprinter especially should they return to The Valley.
“The way he’s going I can’t see why he couldn’t step up a grade,“ Cartwright said.
“It was a pretty soft win today, especially around Moonee Valley, and he might be able to pick up a stakes race.”
