HAMO’S THREE TO WATCH
BEST BET: STYLISH MEMPHIS
(Melton Harness, R7 No.13)
BEST VALUE: PASSAGE OF TIME
(Randwick, R7 No.4)
LAY OF THE DAY: SOUTHERN LAD
(Randwick, R7 No.11)
JOHN DILLON STAKES (1400m)
Caulfield, R8, 5.20pm
Distance specialist Yulong January has been popular in early betting to win one of Saturday’s features at $2.60.
Trained by in-form pair Ciaron Maher & David Eustace, Yulong January is chasing his fifth successive win. His past four wins have all been over this journey and by an aggregate winning margin of more than six lengths.
He has won five of eight over this trip and boasts an excellent overall record of seven wins and three placings from just 13 starts.
The form around Yulong January has also been franked with Amadeus, who finished second to him twice recently, taking out the Chester Manifold Stakes on January 11.
Guizot, who finished second to Amadeus at listed level at his last start, is second favourite and is the logical threat.
TIP: YULONG JANUARY
CARRINGTON STAKES (1400m)
Randwick, R7, 5:00pm
The Joe Pride-trained Passage Of Time always seems to attract support and once again punters have specked him early and he’s firmed from $9 to $8.
He comes into the race off a fourth to Southern Lad at Randwick when he was giving the winner 7.5kg. The pair clash again with just 5kgs between them this time.
Nash Rawiller takes the ride on Passage Of Time.
Southern Lad has been strongly supported from $3.80 into $2.70 and the John O’Shea’s stable has been flying lately.
He looks very skinny odds given he’s untried at the 1400m and failed at his only 1300m run, albeit after a tardy start.
TIP: PASSAGE OF TIME
VICTORIA OAKS FINAL (2760m)
Melton Harness, R7, 9.07pm
The Victoria Oaks looks the best of the feature races to play in at Saturday night’s huge Melton harness meeting.
At first glance the barrier draw looked horrendous for glamour Kiwi filly Stylish Memphis, but she may just be a class above her rivals.
Yes, she’ll need to be from outside the back row (gate 13) and main danger Dr Susan drawn to lead from barrier five, but that’s the reason she’s $2.50 and not $1.30, which she’d have been from a gun draw.
Stylish Memphis has beaten home Dr Susan by at least three lengths in their three clashes back in NZ so far and driver Mark Purdon is sure to moving around the field early to put the pressure on his main rival.
It’s got all the makings of a stirring battle, but this year’s increase from 2240m to 2760m for the Oaks could have come at just the right time for Stylish Memphis.
TIP: STYLISH MEMPHIS
