The Swifts could go from premiers to wooden spoon

An unprecedented bounce from wooden spooners to premiers or the western juggernaut finally realising its potential?

Both scenarios are firming at the halfway point of the Super Netball season with West Coast Fever holding the competition lead on percentage from the Melbourne Vixens.

The 2020 premiers, who slumped to the wooden spoon last season in the absence of captain Liz Watson, have rebounded spectacularly in the first half of this year, although let a chance to hold sole lead at the halfway point slip on Sunday with a loss in the Victorian derby.

The Fever sit on top of the ladder on percentage and are flying towards a possible first premiership after two Super Netball grand final appearances.

In the season that promised to be the closest ever, it’s still anyone’s game at the halfway point, with results over the last fortnight leaving the ladder condensed and just three wins separating first from last.

The Firebirds are the only surprise in the top four, with few having rated their finals chances at the start of the year, while defending premiers, the NSW Swifts are last after losing talismanic shooter Sam Wallace to a season-ending injury in the opening round.

Injury and Covid have already played a major part in the season and will continue to do so.

After two years played in hubs to protect the game, the league showed its determination to run a full home-and-away season by refusing to postpone the Covid-stricken clubs’ matches early in the year, determined the game must go on under almost any circumstances.
