Maurizio Sarri’s start to the season is following the same pattern as at least FIVE Chelsea managers who lost their jobs, including Antonio Conte.
After 15 games the cigarette-smoking Italian has scooped up 31 points in the Premier League — but history shows that total may not be enough for demanding owner Roman Abramovich.
Under the Russian Oligarch’s ownership, four previous Chelsea managers have lost their jobs before the start of the next season.
Claudio Ranieri was sacked at the end of the 2003-04 season after finishing second, and had 36 points at the end of 15 games.
In 2007-08, Jose Mourinho was axed after six Premier League games and Avram Grant took over, steering them to 31 points after 15 Prem matches.
Grant would go on to finish second in the top flight that season, coming within one game of beating Manchester United to the title, before losing the Champions League final on penalties to Sir Alex Ferguson’s team.
The following season heralded a new dawn under Luiz Felipe Scolari in 2008-09, who had the Blues scoring goals and flying high in the autumn.
After starting the season top dogs, they slipped to second on game 15, but by game 25 they were fourth and Scolari was sacked.
After Carlo Ancelotti’s successful double triumph and then second-place finish, Andre Villas-Boas came in.
The Portuguese clocked 31 points from 15 games (sound familiar?) and was then sacked after 27 games with the club fifth.
They would go on to finish sixth that season, but qualify through Roberto Di Matteo’s incredible Champions League triumph.
And after 2016-17, after tweaking the tactics to a 3-4-3 and powering to a superb Premier League title win, Antonio Conte was sacked after the end of the season, winning the FA Cup, to be replaced by Sarri.
His 32 points at this stage last season was more than the current Blues boss now.
Could the writing be on the wall, or will the West London club power on to finish closer to Manchester City and Liverpool at the top?
